AUGUST NEWSLETTER

2018

Important information for all members regarding next month's luncheon and fashion show

It's less than two months from the Peals of Wisdom Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show to benefit the NCBWL's scholarship fund. Invitations were mailed last week. In addition to purchasing your ticket (which you can also do online here), please remember that we are asking all members to participate to help us make this year another success. Take note of the following:

  • All members are asked to contribute one silent auction item or sponsorship. Turn in silent auction items as soon as possible. The due date for items is Monday, August 27, 2018. We will be grouping items for baskets and determining displays and time is needed before auction to do that. Items can be turned into Debbie Lassiter or Karen McCoy. Debbie has a large plastic container on her front porch now for auction items in the event she’s not home for a drop off that’s convenient for you.
  • All members are asked to donate a bottle of wine for our “wine grab” table at our luncheon. This can be turned in to Debbie or Karen as well. All items can be turned in at next member meeting, August 15.
  • If you’re interested in being a model for the fashion show, please email Karen or Debbie. The Fall Cabi Fashion preview we saw looks amazing!
  • We will need a few members to arrive early and/or stay later on September 15 to help set up. If interested, please email Karen McCoy at karen57mccoy@gmail.com.
  • Please plan to attend, bring your friends, get your reservations in ASAP!

Thanks to all for the fantastic items and generous donations made to date. Let's pray for another successful event this year.

August Meeting

Guest speaker John Bosio is the Chairman of Catholic Media Productions and acting manager for Nashville Catholic Radio, WBOU 100.5 FM, an affiliate of Relevant Radio. The story of Catholic Media Productions is full of mystery. Many things happened in the past 32 years here in Nashville that can be explained with plausible reasons. We could call them coincidences. But, St. John Paul II reminds us: “In the designs of Providence there are no mere coincidences.” So, what really happened? When we look at the history of Catholic Media Productions through the eyes of faith, we see the Holy Spirit guiding men and women on a journey of faith.

Membership survey on new activities for NCBWL

The Nashville Catholic Business Women's League is growing and we would like to begin to include more activities on our calendar for those who would like more time to network and volunteer. Questions in the survey also include a request for your information for the new member business directory and any ideas you want to offer for a new venue for our monthly meetings. Please take a few minutes to take the survey at the link with the button below here to help us on these projects and initatives.

Membership Survey

From the President ...

Debbie Lassiter, our current NCBWL president, with the two past presidents of the NCBWL Kathleen Pohlid and Beth Lance at the July meeting.

Dear fellow members,

I hope you’ve been enjoying some relaxing and peaceful summer days. It’s hard to believe August is upon us and the new school year will begin soon.

I hosted a board meeting on July 10. We had great conversation and discussion on many topics to include upcoming program speakers, membership update, a member business directory, service opportunities to explore as a group, and more luncheon planning. The Cabi stylists stopped by to meet us as well.

On behalf of the board members, we are excited to report great progress on our plans for our Annual Luncheon, Fashion Show and Auction. The invitations were mailed on July 27 to all members and all guests who attended last year; seven weeks in advance of the event. We printed extra invitations to have available to mail to your family and friends. If you’d like me to mail you some I will. OR, please email me, and I’d be happy to mail them for you.

To date, we’ve collected $3,850 in cash donations, $11,485 in auction item value, and $3,500 in table sponsors for a total of $18,835 to date. This represents 42% of our $45,000 overall goal for the event.

We are very grateful for each of our event co-chairs and especially Karen McCoy who is chairing the auction for us this year. For those of you who missed the July meeting, we announced that Cabi will be our fashion partner this year; Gina Miller and Susan Smoot will be our independent Cabi stylists. They are both very excited to share their fall fashions with us. I’ve invited them both to be my guests at the August monthly meeting to share a preview with you all.

Also announced at the July meeting is that the Vanderbilt University Club will be closing December 31. So this means that our remaining meetings there are August 15, October 17 and November 14 (changed from November 21 due to it being the night before thanksgiving day). Please note, there is no regular meeting in September or December.

September 15 is the luncheon and December is our Christmas party at a member's home.

We are soliciting your thoughts and ideas for new venues for our monthly member meetings. A task team has been formed to identify viable options based on our member preferences. We will begin talking to, visiting and comparing viable choices in August.

A quick shout out and thank you to Frances Rogers and Goldner and Associates. She designed and printed our new letterhead for us. After Barbara Esteves-Moore designed our luncheon invitations, Frances printed those for us as well. We hope she will decide to join our membership soon.

Enjoy your summer days with family and friends. And, don’t forget to follow up on your auction items. If you need help with picking up items, please email either Karen or me.

See you at our next meeting on August 15.

Gratefully,

Debbie

NCBWL member, Catherine Melvin Herro and her husband, Joey are happy to announce the arrival of their first child, Ruby Margeurite Herro. She was born on Friday July 13th at 1:27AM at 8lbs 3oz and 20 inches. Proud parents Joey and Catherine say: She is truly our greatest blessing!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: KIM HOOVER

Member Kim Hoover was inspired to earn her history degree at her first NCBWL meeting. The rest, as they say, is history.

“I attended my first NCBWL meeting at the invitation of Peggy Hunt in 2008.  The speaker was Steve McCarthy, history professor at Aquinas College.  He mentioned during his talk that Aquinas was offering a history degree starting in the fall,” Kim said remembering her first visit to NCBWL. “I started that fall and finished my bachelor’s degree at Aquinas in 2012 with a History major, and a Business Administration minor. Teri Gordon was my Business Law professor!”

“So NCBWL played a part in me finishing my bachelor’s degree.  Fast forward 9 years to 2017, and Debbie Lassiter invited me to a meeting. ...
