Greetings From Your President

Spring is here and hope springs eternal! We are hoping for good things for our unit in the upcoming months. We have three meetings and the State Convention coming up between now and mid-June. We encourage you to invite other retireesor school employees to join you. Maybe offer them a ride?

For the April meeting we have the Apple Blossom Royalty visit plus some student guests who will share with us some special projects that we have helped fund. This is always a highlight of our year.

On June 4-5 the WSSRA will hold the State Convention here in Wenatchee at the Convention Center.

We encourage any member to attend. I need to get the number of attendees in very soon so please let me know if you are interested. There are always good speakers, entertainment and updates on what is happening around the state and especially with the legislature and plans for the future. Our unit has over 900 members and we would like to see more of you get actively involved.

Sincerely,

Beverly Jagla, Unit 2 President

District 12 Legislative News

All School Retirees Will See Increases in Their Pensions This Year!!!

The 2018 Legislative session was the best session school retirees have had since 2010. All school retires will see an increase in their pension this July. Additionally, all Medicare Eligible Retirees will receive increased assistance on their PEBB supplemental insurance. It is being increased from $150 per month to $168 per month.

Changes for Plan 1 Retirees:

  • Upon a unanimous final vote, legislators passed a 1.5% increase for TRS 1 and PERS 1 retirees.
  • Plan 1 minimum benefit levels will increase by 3% on July 1.

Changes for Plan 2 & 3 Retirees:

  • Retirees in plan 2 & 3 will receive an inflation based COLA on July 1.

Improvement for all TRS and PERS Retirees:

  • Increase in the Medicare Eligible Healthcare Benefit to $168 will help all retirees over the age of 65 who participate in PEBB Medical Insurance. This starts Jan. 1, 2019 and will help cushion against rate increases.

What the legislature provided this year was not what we requested, but we will continue our work. Your message is getting through to your legislators. All 147 of them talked about the barrage of retirees who have been contacting them about their benefits. Also, we had big advocacy efforts from legislators in both political parties. We deserve bipartisan support on our issues and this year we got it.

Our District 12 legislators have been very supportive. An email, phone call or note of thanks to them would be very appropriate.

WHS Mariachi Band Says "Thank You CDSRA!"

The WHS Mariachi Band performed for the CDSRA March Meeting. CDRSA provided funds to help them take their band members to Washington D.C. and perform at the Capital. They were great ambassadors for our area. Their director, Ramon Rivera, is an active CDRSA member. His message was, “Let’s focus on the great things our students
are doing; and THANK YOU CDSRA!”

Community Giving

Haven of Hope is grateful for all the travel shampoo, conditioner, and lotions. Thanks also
for the zip lock storage bags. Next time they could use paper towels, disinfecting wipes, liquid hand soap and disinfectant, and Kleenex tissues andcards. They really appreciate our generosity!

Credit Card Skimmers

Because gas pumps and ATMs are outside and not in direct control of company employees, they are frequent targets for credit card "Skimmers". These add on devices capture your account information as you swipe your card to complete your transaction, transmitting the stolen information to a thief via Bluetooth or saving it on a chip for later use. Tell tale signs of a skimmer include:

  • Seams where none belong
  • Plastic slightly different in color, texture or quality than the rest of the machine
  • Equipment that is off center, crooked or loose
  • Readers that stick our too far or look suspicious

Don't take chances! Inform the manager and take your business elsewhere. Better be safe than sorry!!!!
