Letter from Colorado ASTA President, Rebecca Jonas The end is near! The finish line is in sight! Many of us are counting down--days, performances, classes, lessons until we get our much needed breaks! As we come into the month of May, most of us are fatigued, exhausted, and stressed. Here are a few tips to make it to the end of the school year and finish strong. 1. Don’t stop too early. Plan a final unit after the final concert, or a project or challenge with your private students. 2. Organize and prioritize. Don’t try to take on too much--in teaching, in cleaning the orchestra room, in planning group numbers on your recital. 3. Reflect. Use this time to reflect on what went well this year and what you want to change for next year. Create a document that you can access at the start of next year. 4. Overcommunicate. This is a busy time of year for everyone, with lots of teachers and coaches competing for parents' attention. Send flyers, emails, etc., and consider following up with texts or phone calls. 5. Delegate. Find ways for people to help you. 6. Make time to recognize student achievement in fun and meaningful ways. 7. Take some time daily to do something for fun for yourself. 8. Look ahead. Hopefully you have something to look forward to: a vacation...time to read, garden, or practice...whatever. As we all continue on towards the end of the school year, I want to thank you for your membership, and thank you for all that you’re doing to educate the next generation of string players. Thanks! Rebecca |
