Celebrate Our New Engine With Us We took delivery of our new apparatus on May 13th. There is still much to do. Graphics need to be applied and the safety and firefighting equipment used must be loaded on board. The acquisition of this much needed piece of equipment would not have been possible without the never-ending support of the Fairfield Glade Community Club, residents and businesses of Fairfield Glade. We can’t thank you enough. This new apparatus will mean much to the community. First of all, this unit replaces a 21-year-old engine whose annual maintenance was a financial burden to the department. The new truck enables the fire department to maintain a reserve engine when other units are being serviced. The new unit carries 1000 gallons of water, 400 gallons more water than the truck it replaces. Maintenance costs will be reduced while bringing more modern and efficient technology to the department.
Soon, we hope to be scheduling events to introduce the public to our latest addition. There will be experienced firefighters on hand to answer any questions you might have. Once again, we want to thank the Fairfield Glade Community Club and it's residents for their donations which made this acquisition possible. |

Born in Austria, at five years old, Abe and his family immigrated to Chicago where he grew up. After marrying his one and only wife they moved to the suburb of Park Ridge, IL to raise their son, who subsequently met and married a Park Ridge girl and they have given Abe and his wife two wonderful grandkids. Abe's education began in the Chicago Public School System. From there it was on to Roosevelt University and Northwestern University graduating with an accounting degree in 1975. Abe's parents instilled in him a work ethic by setting an example. Abe was inspired to work throughout his education years. Abe's professional career began at the IRS, then the Department of Defense as an auditor and later in management. Abe retired in 2008 after 32 years and soon after moved to the Glade. His hobbies include playing golf (badly), a little fishing and a lot of yard work. Prior to coming to Tennessee, Abe had no prior experience with fire service but back in Chicago he had a lot of friends that were either Police or Firefighters. As a young man he was never interested in either of those jobs. When Abe moved to the Glade in 2009, he met and talked to several members of the Fairfield Glade Fire Department. They were a great bunch. One day in 2012 after seeing an ad for the FGFD Abe met with the then chief, Howard Robb. He asked Howard about necessary qualifications, Howard responded, “Can you walk?” Abe began the training two weeks later. Currently, Abe holds the position of Deputy Chief. When the department created an EMR Program (Emergency Medical Response), Abe signed up. 5 fellow firefighters studied, trained, and were certified. That EMR program ran for about 5 years. In addition to Deputy Chief, Abe is also the “sign guy”, making and installing the green reflective 911 signs that you see on mailboxes. This job provides Abe the opportunity to meet many new Glade residents. Do you have your sign? If not, call me at 931 484-6019 and we will get that done. According to Abe, "being a Firefighter turned out to be one of the best things I’ve ever done. It’s not easy work, but it is very satisfying. It’s a good feeling when you can help a friend, neighbor or stranger when they have a medical or fire issue or just a bad day." If you see Abe around the Glade or hacking his way along a fairway, say hi and thank him for his service. |

Where Does The Money Come From The annual operating budget for the Fairfield Glade Fire Department is approximately $170,000.00. This pays for expenses, such as rent, electricity, internet, gas for vehicles, propane for heating, legal and accounting fees. This budget adds no money to our Capital Reserve. We cover these operating costs with an annual donation from the Fairfield Glade Community club, a donation from Cumberland County, our charity events, and the generous support of you, the residents. These fundraising efforts, however, do not provide contributions to our Capital Reserve. We estimate an annual need for capital reserve funding to top $100,000.00. We regularly apply for grants to a number of agencies and for county funding, but lately positive responses have been few and far between. |

Where Does The Money Go Your Fairfield Glade Fire Department adheres to the guidelines issued by the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA). NFPA Standard 1851 guidelines specify useful life spans for almost all the equipment we use, from firefighter protective clothing to fire trucks. These guidelines necessitate the timely replacement of equipment in order to maintain the excellent ISO rating we all enjoy. Currently, the average cost to equip one exterior firefighter with "turnout gear," which does not include a radio or a self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is in excess of $4,000.00. In 2025 the department will need to replace 27 sets of turnout gear that have reached the end of their useful life. That represents a cost of over $108,000.00. This is just one example of the many items we need to keep current in order to maintain our level of efficiency in protecting you, your family and your property. The average age of our apparatus fleet is over 20 years. With your help, we recently acquired a new truck at a cost of $470,000.00. Due to the age of our fleet, we will have to do that again in 5 years. The money required to keep our fleet and related equipment up to standard must come from our Capital Reserve. In order to keep pace with these future costs we must set aside $100,000.00 or more annually. The annual difference between what we raise and what we need to spend represents a $9,000.00 shortfall, EACH YEAR. So you see, funding our day to day operations is only a small part of the puzzle. We need additional funding from all resources including grants, donations and sponsorships to enable us to fund the future. |
