It's what's on the inside that counts. Don't judge a book by its cover. We all know that. Jewish tradition teaches that you might have a new bottle with old wine in it or a new bottle with not even new wine in it.

Likewise, our symbol for the Torah is the pomegranate. Why? Because look at it-- on the outside it is ordinary, but on the inside complex and magnificent with delicious bites of nourishment. And isn't that the message of Judaism? To never take things at face value. To always investigate, interrogate, question, and search to find answers?

MAZAL TOV TO BEVERLY!

This is what it looks like the minute after a person is accepted into the covenant of the Jewish people! Three happy rabbis (white and red shirts), one happy partner (purple shirt), and a very enthusiastic candidate (yellow shirt). This past Friday, after 6 years of study and living in Jewish community, under the sponsorship of Rabbi Miller, Beverly Crawford appeared before a bet din who joyfully recognized her Jewish identity. Beverly is a wonderful healer-- a nurse with decades of experience and a joyful heart. The Jewish community rejoices! 

The Bet Din is is run by the Sandra Caplan Community Bet Din program which is a collaboration among Reform, Conservative, and Reconstructionist movement leaders to affirm and confirm Jewish identity which all three will happily recognize. Learn more about the Sandra Caplan Community Bet Din HERE.

CONFIRMATION CEREMONY

Confirmation is a ceremony that confirms commitment to Torah study, depth-seeking, and engagement with community. We will gather to lift up this sacred activity that provides deep life purpose and meaning.

We celebrated 21 confirmands and their commitment to continued sacred study! They shared reflections on the meaning behind engagement with ancient texts, and received a beautiful, custom-made original artist-commissioned certificate made by Christina Mattison Ebert commemorating this joyful day.

MAZAL TOV, JAXSON, ON YOUR BAR MITZVAH!

Many thanks to Jaxson and his family for sending this lovely thank you note after his wonderful bar mitzvah ceremony. His exposition on the Torah portion was so wonderful, highlighting the Jewish value of caring for animals as outlined in Deuteronomy 22:4, “If you see your brother’s donkey or ox fallen on the road, you must NOT ignore it; you MUST help him pick up the load.” He brought in texts from Rashi and Ibn Ezra to illuminate his teaching. And, yes, that is a yarmulke wearing Bar Mitzvah cat on his T-shirt. He also raises ducks and is grateful for the Jewish imperative to put a parapet on the roof-- it has saved one of his ducks, Mr. Quackers, a few times. Mazal Tov, Jaxson & family!

MAZAL TOV ON YOUR WEDDING, DAN & ANDREA!

Saturday, Dan & Andrea combined forces officially as #Dandrea2021! Rabbi Miller officiated their wedding at the stunning (and tasty!) Inn of the 7th Ray in Topanga, CA. Their vows were incredible-- and by the way, do you start vows with "Dear Andrea?" We got our answer from the bride herself: decidedly NO. That and so many other special moments like Mabel the dogdaughter, a land acknowledgement & announcement of tzedakah, and a Jurassic park reference made this ceremony truly unique and deeply meaningful. Mazal Tov to Dan & Andrea - your love is inspiring and the entire Keeping It Sacred community wishes you many years of happiness ahead.

DEEPEST CONDOLENCES

Sunday, Rabbi Miller officiated a touching tribute, a memorial service, for a beautiful human being. We ended with blessings of comfort to the many mourners in attendance. The measure of a life is in its quality, not quantity. The Keeping It Sacred community extends our deepest condolences to the family. His memory is an abiding blessing.

ACCESS JUDAISM

Access Judaism is a KITS Signature Program. It offers relevant and empowering adult learning provided in a fun, relaxed environment. This program features a broad spectrum of thoughtfully curated Jewish subjects in the realms of history, rituals, culture, philosophy, law, and spirituality. ROSH CHODESH RACIAL JUSTICE REVIEW

Keeping It Sacred's Rosh Chodesh Racial Justice Review will provide structured space to explore the nature of systemic racism from top thinkers, and help us to reflect upon the ways we participate in, and are impacted by systems of oppression, and what we can and should do about it-- from a Jewish lens.
