Matador is the next book in the Jessica Watts Southwest Suspense Series and will come out next year. Jessica's mom gets a guard dog from the local animal shelter to protect her after Jessica starts investigating a murder that occurred on the property years earlier. I have the picture of the dog in my head, an 80-pound female that looks like the one in these photos. I haven't come up with a name for the dog yet and would love your help. If you have suggestions for this dog's name, please reply to this email or click here to contact me. Thank you!

El Paso author

Like me, Yasmín Ramirez grew up in El Paso, Texas. Her memoir, ¡Ándale, Prieta! is a poignant look at her life, and it has stayed with me long after I finished it. This book earned a silver medal at the International Latino Book Awards, and she also received Honorable Mention for the 2023 Américas Award for Children’s and Young Adult Literature and earned a spot on the 2023 Top Ten List of the In the Margins YA Non Fiction Book Awards.

A rising star of El Paso literature, Ramirez was honored with the 2023 Southwest Book Award by the Border Regional Library Association, underscoring her significant contributions to regional literature, and ¡Ándale, Prieta! was chosen for the El Paso Matters Book Club.

A Martha’s Institute of Creative Writing Author Fellow and recipient of the Woody and Gayle Hunt-Aspen Institute Fellowship Award, Ramirez has gained notable recognition for her literary contributions.

She serves as an Associate Professor at El Paso Community College, actively contributes to the Borderplex arts community, and served on the advisory board for BorderSenses, a literary non-profit organization. El Paso has a long history of art and literature tied to the border, and Yasmín Ramirez is a new voice to add to the narrative.
