Sunnyvale Safe Streets works to make Sunnyvale safe and enjoyable for walking and biking. In this month's issue, you can read about potential bike lanes on Hollenbeck, the true cost of unsafe streets, what you can do about parked vehicles in bike lanes, how the community saved a passage through West Valley School, Bike Week at Homestead High School, and how you can help make a key bike route safe for Homestead High students.

Hollenbeck Bike Lanes May Become Reality

Hollenbeck Avenue is a major north-south corridor cutting through the south half of Sunnyvale.  Currently, Hollenbeck does not have bike lanes, preventing many people from biking on it. Those who do bike on Hollenbeck do so with a heightened risk of collision.  Bike lanes on Hollenbeck would greatly improve the safety and convenience of biking in Sunnyvale. Proposed by Sunnyvale's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC) in 2021 and funded in 2023, a study to explore the potential of bike lanes on Hollenbeck is currently underway. Vehicles Blocking Bike Lanes

On my daily walks around Sunnyvale, I often see vehicles parked in the bike lane. They are often commercial vehicles, and they are sometimes even parked on the sidewalk. They are parked not just for a short time but for hours at a time. They do so even when parking or loading zones are nearby. California Vehicle Code CVC 21211(b) prohibits vehicles from stopping or parking in the bike lane, even for a short time. Read more ....

West Valley School Passage Saved

A popular foot and bike passage through West Valley School serves many in the community. This passage crosses Stevens Creek and connects Sunnyvale and Los Altos.  For many students and community members, it is the safest and most pleasant bike + pedestrian route to get to destinations like West Valley School, Cupertino Middle School, and Trader Joe's.  At the start of the new school year in August, the Cupertino Union School District began installing fencing and gates to secure their schools against undesirable intruders. However, the fencing and gates also cut off access to the West Valley School passage for students and community members. Read more ....
