Hi everyone,
Over the years many people have met told me that they exercise regularly, when I ask them what they do, they reply simply, 'I walk'. Now while walking is a great form of exercise, for our bodies, it is not enough on its own to maintain our strength and physical wellness.
If we consider walking, it is a great form of movement, often giving us a reset, all while strengthening certain muscles, particularly in the lower legs.
However, if we think about the power to move and handle daily life, we need much more than just walking. For one it doesn't give us any lateral movement, which is important for balance and stability in the body, and many muscles will lay dormant if not challenged beyond simply walking. And unless you're walking involves significant steps or hills, it will not increase or even maintain leg strength to any degree that is essential to move with ease and power.
It is why we can be doing the exercise of walking and believe we are keeping fit and then over time suddenly finding that we can no longer perform an exercise, or start to have noticeable difficulty with movements that before were simple and easy to perform.
We have created a pretence of normal that as we get older we expect to lose our physical strength, the question is how normal is it to not be able to do things as we age. Is deterioration something you are simply willing to settle for, or is there a different form of ageing we can consider. And know that ageing is not for the so called elderly, it is for everyone to be aware and is occurring for all of us from the mid 30s onwards, the age where the body moves pasts its peak (by conventional measurement) performance capability. Why though conform to conventional when the opportunity is to have great wealth of physical health, at any age.
Walking is for sure is a valuable and essential form of exercise, but its not the whole when it comes to being physically strong and ready for life.
