The Photographic Book Today:

An Overview of Traditional and New Publishing Options

Santa Fe Workshops | July 31 – August 4, 2023

Greetings to all from beautiful Southern Arizona!

I invite you to join me in Santa Fe this summer to learn all about the process of bringing your long-term photography project to the book form.

Scarlett relaxing after a long day of selecting photobooks for the Santa Fe Workshops.

This small, in-person group workshop consists of a combination of richly illustrated lectures, site visits, and photography professionals visiting our classroom.  Through comprehensive lectures, visits and discussions with photobook designers, publishers, bookmakers and booksellers, workshop participants will learn the necessary steps to effectively publishing a book of their photographs.

Workshop topics include assessing your project’s readiness for publication, researching publishing brands, understanding contract terms, and evaluating options and challenges associated with self-publishing. You will leave this workshop with a path to publication that is right for your work and best for you.

A teaching library of recent photobooks will be available to view successful publications, learn how these projects came to print and the process through which they made their way into the hands of buyers.

Each participant is invited to bring a selection of work from a project they are interested in publishing to share with the class in conversation with me for personalized feedback, brainstorming possible collaborators, identifying potential publishers, and clarifying targeted audience(s).  Photographic artist LISA McCARTY (Transcendental Concord, Radius Books, 2018) will share her publishing journey with us, and DARIUS D. HIMES, co-founder of Radius Books and my long-time co-author of Publish Your Photography Book (now in its third, revised edition) will join us for a final review session.  I look forward to teaching photobooks in person!

This will be a great week at the Workshops alongside fellow faculty members Kate Breakey (“The Hand-Colored Photographic Print”) and Susan kae Grant (“The Handmade Artist’s Book: Envisioning Form & Content”).  Please join us!  Email me with your questions: mvswanson@gmail.com

As our workshop concludes, RADIUS BOOKS ARTIST WEEKEND begins!

On Saturday August 5th from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm a unique gathering of artists published by Radius Books will participate in a special group book signing.  This is a rare chance to meet an inspirational group of accomplished artists, view their books and purchase signed copies.

This event marks the official release and book signing of the revised and expanded third edition of Publish Your Photography Book from our new publisher Radius Books.  Darius and I will both be present to sign copies.  This event is free and open to all, food truck on site.
