A Perception of the D-CAMP by Sulicu Alina, Romania |
It was the place where I learned that there are people who need more than medicines and compassion. Attending the D-PATH with my family -husband and daughter (7) was a life lesson. We had always been in a hurry and too tired to even notice what was going on around us about diabetes. But in those 7 camp days we found out that for some people eating, exercise, drinking just any kind of stuff was challenging... and most of the times an endless ordeal. I had heard about such situations but I had never witnessed anything of the kind. Therefore what I will say next are the conclusions of someone who got to understand the challenges of people with special needs as generated by diabetes. There were warm days, full of suspense and novelty… and you know why ?... Every meeting was different, every workshop was special…We were all the time on the move. Breakfast for people with diabetes for instance, involved careful weighing, caution of food allowed in the diet for diabetics and the organizer was permanently with her eyes on the job. Another strong point was psychological counseling, but not only for those with diabetes, for all parents of children in the camp too… to help them understand how to react in concrete situations. I cannot but thank Magdalena for doing such a great job and Viorica Alexandru for having me on the Romanian team. |

I think we need to be more careful with ourselves and with our health! I honestly admired those children and their parents as they did not cease to look for solutions however much they felt the burden of the disease. Such people live with a special need on which their life depends. 71 years ago on the occasion of opening the first institute of geriatrics and gerontology in Romania, Ana Aslan, the founder, said : LET'S GIVE LIFE TO YEARS AND YEARS TO LIFE! Myself, I would love to put to practice this kind of wise wording by developing a program to include meetings and podcasts spreading scientists’ knowledge and answering ‘in concreto’ the questions of those in need ! |

In 1991 the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization (WHO) gave the start to celebrating the World Diabetes Day every November in response to the rapid rise of diabetes around the world. Since 2016 already IDF member associations, organizations, companies, healthcare professionals, politicians, celebrities, and people living with diabetes and their families in more than 160 countries have been marking the Diabetes Day on the 14th November. Since then, they have been engaged in campaigns including diabetes screening programs, radio and television campaigns, sports events and others on the risk of diabetes and its complications. All were according to a theme selected for one or more years depending on the wide needs of the people. For example : · 2013: Protect our Future: Diabetes Education and Prevention. · 2014: Go Blue for Breakfast. · 2015: Healthy Eating. · 2016: Eyes on Diabetes. · 2017: Women and diabetes – our right to a healthy future. · 2018–2019: The Family and Diabetes – diabetes concerns every family.[7] · 2020: The Nurse and Diabetes |

Magdalena Pardel- Sharing a personal experience… As a diabetic, I know how important it is to recognize the symptoms of type 1 diabetes: too few know them, and too many confuse them with something else. November 14 is the World Diabetes Day, so I decided to join the #seethesigns campaign to help educate people about the symptoms of diabetes. |
I had 4 symptoms of type 1 diabetes: excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue and unexplained weight loss. When I went to the family doctor, he immediately recognized them, because he had a person with type I diabetes in his family. My sugar at the check-up was 480 mg/dL. Share the symptoms of undiagnosed #T1D because today it is the #worldiabetesday. I hope telling my story will help others see the signs/ #seethesigns before it's too late. Beyond type 1 #dcamp .
