Playing with Fire

One of my favorite times of the year with Mitch was getting ready for Spring.  We'd pull out the old barrel and spend several days burning the limbs and branches that had fallen from the trees.  Those were the days when we were still allowed to do it.

Mitch would fashion a wire mesh over the barrel so that the fire would pretty much be contained to it.  We'd basically hang out there together talking about what we'd do with the garden that year. Mitch hated the cold winters so he enjoyed it as well. It was fun to spend that time together, and who doesn't like to play with fire?

Behind the shed, there is an open area that always gets overgrown with vines.  It had spread around the side of the fence near the garden.  Mitch decided on an easy way for us to clear it.  He told me to get the hose and meet me back at the fence. Suddenly he appears with his blowtorch. I tried to talk him out of his "brilliant" idea, but there was no stopping him.  My job was to be ready with the hose in case the fire got out of control.  Really??!!!!

Well, we didn't burn anything down, but then Mitch told me about the time he had set his neighbor's shed on fire!  Had I known that, I might not have gone along with his mad caper. Can you imagine?  It turned out that the neighbor actually thanked him later because the insurance paid for him to get a new shed.

I had already planned to tell you this story when I received a weather alert on my phone this morning warning of the fire hazard risk for the next few days.  Needless to say, I won't be playing around with Mitch's blowtorch any time soon.
