Are You Thinking Strategically (Enough)?

One of the most common challenges facing new(ish) leaders is how to pull out of the weeds of daily work and begin looking "up" across the organization. Newer leaders are told to "be more strategic" or "think more strategically" - but they often do not know where to start.

Compounding this issue, many experienced leaders may find it difficult to articulate to their subordinates exactly how to think "more strategically" (or they may struggle with strategic thinking too).

Below are a few resources that I typically offer to leaders to orient them to the world of strategic thinking. If you are new leader (or want to know more about strategic thinking skills), I encourage you to check the resources out.

If you the manager of a new leader, forward this email on to your new leaders (and maybe check them out too - they are some great ideas!).

  1. Start with the Harvard Business Review article entitled Strengthen Your Strategic Thinking Muscles. This article will give you ideas on how to get started with thinking more strategically.
  2. Then, read these other two HBR pieces: Make Strategic Thinking Part of Your Job and 4 Way to Improve Your Strategic Thinking Skills. These articles expand on the first article and offer you even more ideas about how to think and be more strategic in your unique role.
  3. Finally, pick two pieces of advice from the articles and try them out for two weeks. Really lean in. Changing the way you think takes time, but you can do it!

It is incredibly common for new leaders to be promoted based on their individual contributions/specific expertise and then expect them to instantly have the skills needed to perform at a new level. Small items like these articles enable leaders with tools for their expanding toolkit, which helps them - and you as their leader!
