PACIFIC BEACH HS FARM BOX HARVEST, PACKING AND SALES

On December 12, Farm Class students packed 30 boxes of winter veggies and herbs from the school garden for the second installment of the Farm Box entrepeneurial program.

Students helped distribute all the boxes to preordering families and drive-by customers at the School site.

WINTER UPGRADES and PREPARATION

Site Manager Shane Lovell designs new shelves for the old greenhouse

They provide room for a large array of seeds and seedlings grown by Farm Manager Jade Rosario, volunteers and students and being readied for Spring planting.

With the participation of all farm staff, Shane has also constructed a flexible three-chamber compost bin and next to it a heavy-duty worm bin  designed with the help of Christy Christie, owner of Black Diamond Vermicompost.  She has volunteered to come to the farm soon to stock it with new inhabitants and to provide education about the methods and values of this aspect of soil enrichment.

As part of our new Soil Health Initiative, Tim LaSalle, co-founder of the Center for Regenerative Agriculture, contributed materials and know-how to help us create an aerobic digester which will produce fungus-rich compost to stimulate beneficial microbial growth and promote carbon sequestration.

Another aspect of this initiative is stockpiling barn bedding and wood chips next to our solar array in preparation for the planting of a perennial Welcome Garden in coming months.

Last month Friends of Lake Valley Seeds shared their seed bounty with City Farm SLO. Our staff and other garden educators received dozens and dozens of free vegetable, herb, and flower seed packets. Lake Valley Seeds offer many organic and heirloom crop varieties. Heirloom varieties come from open-pollinated seeds. This means seeds have not been genetically modified or hybridized! We look forward to using these seeds in 2020 to grow great food and to expand the City Farm Seed Bank.

SPECIAL NOTE:  If you have read this far, we think you may have an ongoing interest in City Farm SLO. Our present long-serving Board is active and congenial, but we need new ideas and energy from people who support our mission. We ask you to help our organization continue and grow by joining it.
