Welcome to THE BUZZ #5

(official newsletter for The Queanbeyan Hive)

We came 3rd out of 21 projects!

We did not get the funding but it was a great achievement under the circumstances. We were up against established communities with strong vested interests – and we were coming from nowhere with a crazy idea (what is a cultural hub anyway?).

We want to say a huge thank you to all of you that shared our messaging and of course to those that were eligible to vote and went ahead and did so. It wasn’t the easiest process.

What we have gained from the exercise is:

  1. Substantial evidence that we have community support behind us. This will help us for possible future grants applications.
  2. A bigger network of artists and community groups for the Hive
  3. More followers and supporters and a higher profile.
  4. Invaluable experience for future opportunities to activate this Hive project into the next buzzing stage.

The odds were against us due to:

  1. Us not having large established email databases and existing communication networks.
  2. Most parents of school children already had the NSW Service log-in you needed to vote. This log-in has been compulsory for redeeming the NSW Government Active and Creative Kids vouchers -valued at $100 each, so most school parents in NSW have one.
  3. The arduous and convoluted process of actually voting was a lot easier for affluent people with tech savvy. There is a huge digital divide within our community (future workshop ideas coming up!).

Art News

We have some amazing exhibitions lined up until the end of the year so this is very exciting.

These will be announced very soon.

In the meantime, we are sponsoring the QPRC Arts Awards for 2019. In past years Form Gallery has sponsored this prize but in the wake of that gallery closing we are stepping in to offer our exhibition space to some lucky winner.

We invite all artists and craftspeople who reside in the Queanbeyan-Palerang, Snowy Monaro or Yass Valley Local Government Areas, to enter this year! The non-acquisitive awards aim to enhance the recognition and support of our regions' artists and craftspeople, particularly from emerging to mid-career artists.  QPRC are welcoming any entries in any medium including works on paper, photographs, sculpture, textiles, painting or mixed media.

If you are not an artist but know some one who is a hidden talent we encourage you to encourage them to enter. Cost is $15 concession $30 general entry.

Get Down with Up-cycling

We believe in bringing old things back to life. Almost everything in the Hive (the whole building is large a piece of up-cycled material!) is second-hand.

For the QPRC Arts Trail weekend 19/20 October we are very excited to announce that we’re working on a new art show featuring local artists known for their use of things pre-loved or found. On the same weekend The Garage Sale Trail is also happening all across Australia. It’s a big weekend encouraging us to put second-hand first and minimise our impact on the planet - so to celebrate that we are also holding our first market on this weekend as well.

If you would like to hold a stall and be part of this buzzing weekend please register with Button below and/or come to our brainstorming/creation session to determine how we want to run this event.

This coming Thursday 12 September 6-8pm @The Qbn Hive.
