Update #15 - August 2022 Newsletter

Friends of Buddina

Yes, it's time to welcome spring, yet still appreciate the winter mornings that delivered sunrise magic along our coastline - too good to miss!

Not everyone uses Social Media

For our supporters who prefer not to reference Facebook, here are several updates from our page where we share articles, development application links and other local updates that we think are relevant to our beachside community.

(i)  what's been happening?

SCRC Meeting held Thursday 23 June 2022

And it was back again - this time supposedly as just a "report" on the June Agenda.

The Buddina Urban Village site specific Planning Scheme amendments for the residential sub-precinct LPSP-4a were approved at the April Council meeting.  Later, Cr Cox requested a report be presented at the June meeting.  During the June meeting, Cr Cox moved an amended motion to specifically remove only the north-eastern segment from the SC Planning Scheme (PS) amendment package that had been approved by a majority of Councillors at the April meeting.

For undisclosed reasons, Cr Cox was content to retain the April approved PS changes to 3 of the 4 segments of the residential sub-precinct, yet he insisted on removing just 1 of the 4 segments from the PS amendment package, i.e. only the north-eastern corner. Cr Cox’s motion was defeated 6/5, reaffirming the majority Council decision at the April meeting (2 months earlier).

The good governance decision-making by 6 Councillors is a credit to their integrity. We thank those 6 Councillors for their recognition, respect and support for the Buddina community's concerns over intense development along the State declared erosion prone area, plus associated climate change impacts and the SCRC’s responsibilities as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Environmental concerns were also raised noting that reduced building heights and reduced density supports reductions in the negative artificial lighting impacts on the nesting habitat of endangered loggerhead turtles along Buddina Beach.

Thank you to Cr Joe Natoli, Cr Maria Suarez, Cr David Law, Cr Christian Dixon, Cr Ted Hungerford and Cr Winston Johnston.

There are several more steps in the process, including formal community consultation, following a State interests review.  The history of the issue and further information is available on our website:

Pt Cartwright Reserve & La Balsa Park

SCRC have provided feedback on Pt Cartwright Reserve & La Balsa Park from the first round of community consultation that was held between 29 November 2021 to 9 January 2022.  Check-out the content on Council's website and watch the 13 minute video (grab a cuppa first).

Mooloolaba Harbour entrance - will the future include an extension to the rock wall?

Next steps - a Stakeholder Reference Group is being formed to help investigate a long-term solution for the entrance. It will ensure the interests of key stakeholders – including local representatives from the Coast Guard, commercial and recreational fisherman, harbour business owners, residents and community groups – are considered as part of the investigations.

Community consultation - wider community feedback will be sought following the formation of the Stakeholder Reference Group.

Further information on the TMR website will be provided when available.

Easy changes we can all embrace, all year round. And of course, it’s not just for our precious sea turtles nesting on our beaches; it’s our own health that is impacted. As an individual there are things you can do to help, such as:

1. default to darkness: only light areas for a specific purpose

2. embrace technology: use sensors and dimmers to manage lighting frequency and intensity

3. location, location, location: keep lights close to the ground, shield at the rear, and direct light below the horizontal

4. respect the spectrum: choose low-intensity lights that limit the blue, violet and ultraviolet wavelengths. Wildlife is less sensitive to red, orange and amber light

5. all that glitters: choose non-reflective finishes for your home. This reduces the scattered light that contributes to sky glow.

(ii)  some more stories of interest?

An interesting read from the 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 and it’s good news! Local efforts in waste management have worked, reducing coastal litter by 29% over the last six years. This is because most plastic rubbish we find on Australia’s beaches comes from us, not from other countries...

Another good read – this one’s about the The Beeyali Project which “began in Queensland to visualise the calls of wildlife using the science of visualising sound… The project aims to sound an alarm for the multitude of vulnerable species on the brink of extinction in Australia… The theme for NAIDOC 2022 “Get up! Stand up! Show up!” calls for action and change. This needs to include addressing the loss of wildlife due to colonisation, and address the damage done to Country and the ecosystems residing within it.”

Interesting and a good read “By itself, sea level rise does not cause erosion. Waves do. As the sea rises, waves can expand the reach and eat away at the beach and beyond. The net effect of wave power increasing and sea level rise will vary locally, however, because changes in wave conditions can either boost or dampen the effect of sea level rise on the coast, depending on how much sand is available and where it is moved to."

Another interesting read and if you substitute Buddina, the coastal corridor and/or Pt Cartwright for Barangaroo, then … ? Unsolicited urbanism is a project of city-shaping initiated by developers, not government. It clearly favours powerful development and financial players. Instead of being subject to proper public planning processes, outcomes are often predetermined.

Mass Transit

On June 24, 2022 Infrastructure Australia (IA) - the Federal Government, announced that it had “included the Sunshine Coast transport connectivity and capacity – Caloundra to Maroochydore proposal on the 2022 Infrastructure Priority List as a Stage 1: Early-stage proposal.

Meanwhile, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council remain committed to local Mass Transit along the coastal corridor, between Birtinya and Maroochydore, coupled with higher density planning scheme implications for our beachside suburbs.
