Spring Into Action

with the Creative Evolutions Ecosystem!

Welcome back to our Human-Centered Ecosystem! While our Collaborators embrace continuous learning and exploration of new methods for fostering creativity, we are happy to continue to share the process with you!

As always, we will only send this when there are interesting and valuable things to share, so it is engaging to read (or watch) what you find inside!

Below you'll find Calida Jones hosting a panel and Kim Davis defending her dissertation, both relating to Women of Color in Leadership, and Rebecca Novick explaining the concepts behind a Shared Leadership Model, such as the one HERE Arts Center adopted for their current hiring process.

We are also excited to announce four very special job opportunities that are open right now! Please share with your cultural ecosystem and remember that as part of our human-centered searches, both candidates for positions and the people who refer them are compensated for their time and value.

HERE Arts Center Launches a New Structure With Co-Directors

With Creative Evolutions' support and guidance, we're happy to share that the HERE board and staff are invested in launching a new structure where HERE will be led by three Co-Directors. These three Co-Directors will all be part of the artistic life of HERE through the curation and support of HERE artists and, if desired, through their own artistic work. Each Co-Director will also lead different functions of the organization, leveraging their individual passions and skills to best serve HERE's team as a whole.

The third Co-Director is Amanda Szeglowski, who until recently served as Associate Artistic Director, was previously a HARP artist at HERE, and has been associated with the organization for 13 years.

These new Co-Directors, along with Szeglowski, will take up the mantle of Founding Artistic Director Kirstin Marting, who will step down this June after 30 years of visionary leadership.

We are currently accepting applications through March 29, 2024. Applications will be considered after that date, but early applications are encouraged.

How did HERE get to a shared leadership model?

From Rebecca Novick:
When Creative Evolutions starts a search process, we don't default to quickly writing job descriptions based on a template before searching for candidates who perfectly fit that mold. We work to deliberately create space at the beginning to step back and review an organization's needs together.

Our clients' positive responses to this method have been encouraging, often resulting in developing a unique approach to leadership positions.

A Shared Leadership Model is just one of those possibilities. Although it is not a new concept, the idea of shared leadership still gives some leaders pause. Even as the complexities of running sustainable arts organizations grow more nuanced, and critique of hierarchal and solo leadership structures increases, embracing a collaborative and shared model requires a deep dedication to improvement.

We are excited to support HERE's transition from a Founder-led organization into three Co-Directors, and to be facilitating field-wide and cross-sector discussions about new structures that can empower different individuals and leadership styles across the country.

Congratulations to Collaborator Kimberly Davis!

Congratulations are in order for Creative Evolutions Collaborator Kimberly Davis, MS, also of Five/6teen Consulting, for her dissertation entitled "Glass Cliffs No More: Black Women Amplifying Leadership Self-Efficacy Through an Arts-Based Sister Circle Model!" You are welcome to attend her defense virtually on March 18 if you are so inclined!

Kim Davis (she/her/hers) is an artist, educator, and researcher with more than 25 years of experience in arts and culture performance, education, and administration for nonprofit and municipal organizations.

New Pathways

This year, Creative Evolutions will uplift many new ways to function together. One of those opportunities will be at the
Yale Innovation Summit where the Creative Evolutions structure and concept won first prize last year for arts innovation!

Yale's Summit brings together industry partners, founders, investors, and leaders in the arts, biotech, climate, health, and tech for programming tracks and networking while leaving the breathing room to hold impactful conversations. This year's Summit in New Haven will be held on May 29 and 30th. Colleagues in the arts ecosystem can attend for only $100 (that includes meals). Use the code ARTS100 below!

In addition, we will be sharing information soon on how your new approaches to artistic work or business models can be showcased at the Summit. If you can't wait to tell us about what you're doing that needs more visibility, go ahead and email us now!

Take a stroll through The Solutions Greenhouse

Creative Evolutions exists to develop, identify, and uplift new ways of looking at how creative fields operate. To that end, members of the Creative Evolutions ecosystem identify new thoughts or ideas and can uplift and share them through these articles below. We encourage the sharing and re-publishing of any and all of these (with appropriate attribution) to expand the perspectives, ideas, and solutions available to our society.
