This month has seen the re-tyred wheels refitted to Beyer Garratt's “Mount Kilimanjaro” at Rugby. The iron wheels which were originally fitted in 1973 when the locomotive was built, were showing signs of wear and had already been reprofiled a few times. The existing wheels were turned down and the correct profile tyres were made from EN !4 steel shrunk on by Andrew Walton and his team at Denver Light Rail, see pictures. The wheels were removed and replaced by the engineering team at the Rugby Society of Model Engineers led by Edward Parrott. The side control springing was adjusted on the leading bogie trucks to guide the locomotive more positively. MK should be up and running again for the new season. and should be appearing at the 7¼” Gauge Society AGM at Rugby in September. |

Finally as today is the 29th of February Happy Birthday to any "leaplings". Also, did you know that the town of Anthony in Texas, USA, is the self-proclaimed ‘Leap Year Capital of the World’? In 1988, resident Mary Ann Brown and her neighbour Birdie Lewis – born on 29th February – approached the Chamber of Commerce with the idea of hosting a celebration for everyone born on a leap day. The celebration would give the town local recognition and help to raise funds for the community. Now, each leap day, Anthony holds a four-day festival and birthday celebration for all leap-year babies. People travel from across America and abroad to take part in the parades, birthday dinners, and hot air balloon rides. If any of our readers are from Texas send us a message to say hello - hello@pnp-railways.co.uk |
