Woodworkers Chapter News

November 2023

Woodworkers Club Officers:  President: Sandy McKinnis, Vice President: Jim Powell; Secretary open

Board Members: Larry Holman, Bob Lackey, Greg Lyall, Alan Peck, Bill Poole

Workshop Use: As we begin use of the new workshop, the Woodworkers Chapter want to remind members that all tools and equipment are for on-site use and none are to be removed or borrowed. Members are only to be in the shop for classes, must register for the Open Shop Program and have an approved shop monitor present. Entry to the new shop will have security and authorized entry measures in place.

Missing Festool Sander:

During the preparation for the shop move, we discovered the Festool RTS 400-EQ-Plus sander missing. It's a small, rectangular hand power sander. The loss of this tool affects numerous users and classes and we hope this finds its way back. Please keep an eye out for it and if someone borrowed it not knowing the tool policy, please contact Sandy McKinnis to return it (akspeech@mtaonline.com, (907) 562-3994).

November Monthly Meeting:

The November monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, November 14 at 7 p.m. in our new workshop at the Alaska Industrial Hardware (AIH) store located at 2716 Commercial Drive. Please enter by the door around the back of the building. The main front entrance will be closed since the meeting time is after store hours.

Jim Crum is our speaker for the November meeting. He will share his prior work, including some impressive, massive doors. He'll bring some of the specialty tools he uses for power carving to add detail to his chain saw carving. Jim is a woodworker, blacksmith, metal worker, chainsaw carver and an artist. Many of you may know of him already as Jim is one of the original members of the club and has taught many classes over the years. He is an engineer by training.

The main portion of our monthly meetings feature guest speakers as well as members who share their expertise. Past topics have included design and construction techniques, project presentations, tool tune-ups, jig demonstrations, and bending.

October Monthly Meeting Recap:

The Woodworkers Chapter meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month from September to May. Bill Poole was our speaker on October 10.

Thanks again to Bill Poole, long-time ACWA member and owner of Alaska Woodcrafters (http://alaskawoodcrafters.com), who gave an hour presentation on finishing techniques. Bill discussed various types of sprayers, different kinds of finish, and what products work best in sprayers. He explained how to adjust the spray profile and how to move the finish across a piece. The audience participated in a hands-on practice using a sprayer.

New Workshop Move and Grand Opening:  Thanks to ACWA members that spent many, many hours and days preparing for the workshop move from AIH in midtown to AIH at 2716 Commercial Drive. Their effort continued on the moving day and the long hours afterward spent organizing the shop for the Grand Opening on the 27th and the first class on the 28th and 29th. Special thanks to the following volunteers: Sandy McKinnis, Larry Holman, Greg Lyall, Bob Lackey, Lisa Lackey, Mike Jens, and David Sundberg. We would also like to thank all who showed up for the Grand Opening. The day included food, displays, meeting fellow members and potential new ones, media coverage, and more. Jeff Clapp, AIH Chief Operating Officer, said the event was "fantastic". We had the room filled with members, the media, the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, and former Gov. Walker even stepped in for a while!

Member Donations:

We have been very fortunate to receive several significant donations this past month for the new workshop. Please read on below and many, many thanks!

Bookshelves for Our Library:

In response to last month’s newsletter request for bookshelves, we received a $1,000 donation for a bookcase to house our club library. The anonymous donor is a long-time member who has given so much to the club over the years. We very much appreciate this latest of the many prior things he's done for us. His support is very much appreciated!

New Laguna Bandsaw:

A big thank you to Larry Holman, Greg Lyall and Hardware Specialties for their donation of a new Laguna model 14 Twelve band saw! Larry received a significant discount for the club from Hardware Specialties and he made a substantial donation then Greg Lyall provided the remainder. This high-quality Laguna band saw is also owned by several ACWA members including two recent personal purchases by members providing high praise. We now have a second shop band saw which will be particularly useful by reducing student waiting time, add to the diversity of cut types without additional setup up time, and facilitate larger classes. Many thanks for a wonderful addition to our new shop.

Mobile Clamp Rack:

During the October move to the new shop and subsequent organizing of the space, Greg Lyall saw the need for us to improve access and storage of the many clamps that had been piled in the drawers and hanging behind equipment. Greg offered to build a mobile clamp rack that would hold all our clamps and could be rolled to the project for use. This is a much needed and nicely built addition toour new shop.

Open Shop Woodworking Saturday:

A reminder that the Open Shop Program has been suspended for November while we continue to settle in to our new shop space and organize. We plan to resume the first Saturday in December to provide members access to the shop equipment and to help folks with projects as needed.
