Coaches Corner

This month’s tip comes from Bill Maze, head women’s coach at UC Davis:

“Most points at every level are won by the opponent making an error, not by someone hitting a winner.  Now we all know hitting winners is fun!  But so is winning!  The best way to not miss is to play "percentage tennis".  What does this mean?  It means hitting the shot that has the best chance of going in each time.  When you play singles the way to play percentage tennis is to go crosscourt with your groundstrokes.  Why is that?  It is because when you hit the ball crosscourt the net is lower and the distance is farther.  Therefore, your chances are better of not missing!  It is a very simple strategy and it works at every level.  When Bjorn Borg was asked how he won Wimbledon 5 times in a row he simply said, "I go crosscourt".”
