February 2024 Newsletter

We love our donor moms.

In honor of Valentine's Day, we want to showcase our love and appreciation to our incredible milk donors. In 2023, over 300 mothers across the state became a milk donor to help save fragile lives. We are forever grateful for each of their lifesaving donations. We hope that you will be inspired by our featured stories this month.

Families of babies that receive donor milk are some of our biggest advocates and supporters. Julie's daughter, Ella received donor milk when she was admitted to the NICU at birth. Julie later became a milk donor.

“My baby was blessed with donor milk until mine came in and when it did, it came in an abundance. While she was still in the NICU, a doctor approached me and with my over supply noted, handed me a card with the information to donate and told me I should look into it. Within a month of bringing our baby home I was screened and ready to donate my first 300oz to babies in need across the state! I can’t help but think God allowed me to be an overproducer, so I’d be able to bless other babies like mine was blessed with donor milk. What a blessing it is to know other kids are nourished just like my baby was!" - Julie

While we love and admire all of our donor moms, our bereaved moms hold an extra special place in our hearts. Thank you, Regan for sharing your story with us.

“On October 19th at 4:07pm at 37 weeks 5 days pregnant, I gave birth to a sleeping baby. Walker Allen weighed 5lbs 14oz and was 21.5 inches long. Our pregnancy was so smooth, no complications. We went for our final checkup and we heard the words no parent should hear, ‘There is no heartbeat.’ We had a placenta abruption. We walked out of the hospital empty handed and arrived at a home full of baby items. I was so excited to breastfeed our baby so when my milk came in, I started pumping. We were able to donate 428oz to the milk bank in our baby boy's honor.” - Regan

Regional Directors

Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee is grateful for the leadership of our five Regional Directors. They each play a significant role in the advancement of our mission. As volunteers, they serve their regions by representing Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee at community events. They also are essential in the recruitment of new Milk Drop Depots to better serve our donor moms.

As our organization continues to grow rapidly, we are recruiting additional volunteers in each region to serve on regional committees and to assist with community outreach events.

If you are interested in joining a regional committee or serving as an event volunteer at community events, please complete the form below.

While most of Tennesseans were snowed in at home during the middle of January, operations did not stop at Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee. Despite the weather conditions, we worked to make sure that each baby in need of pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM) received their lifesaving nutrition. Our 'Milk Man,' Bruce Campbell delivered PDHM and collected donor milk across the state in less-than-ideal conditions. I am so grateful for our entire team that works tirelessly each day to fulfill our mission.

We are excited to officially announce two new Milk Drop Depots. Please join me in welcoming Depot #17 at Le Bonheur Pediatric Group at Memphis Pediatrics Breastfeeding Clinic. On February 14, we will open Depot #18 at Southern Tennessee Regional Health Systems of Winchester.

Over the next few months, we are planning to open more Milk Drop Depots to better serve our donor moms. Milk Drop Depots help collect, log, and send the milk on to us for pasteurization. Milk Drop Depots offer an amazing service to mothers by providing a place where approved donor mothers can bring their milk donations.

Depots historically have helped the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) Milk Banks, such as ours, to receive donor milk from locations distant to the Milk Bank. We are excited to expand our number of Milk Drop Depots in 2024. If you are interested in opening a Milk Drop Depot at your facility, please click here for more information.

Last but not least, I am excited to announce we are now distributing PDHM to the University of Tennessee Medical Center Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Their NICU is a 67-bed unit that provides care for infants born prematurely, critically ill or in need of special care. We are grateful for this new partnership.

As we continue to grow at a rapid pace, I hope you know how much we appreciate your continued support and contributions to further advance our mission!
