An Opportunity Join us! We need your help to continue moving forward Perhaps you have benefitted from information you gained at one of our public programs this year. Or perhaps you were heartened to find that there is a local organization dedicated to working on issues that you, too, are concerned about... The looming crisis of our warming planet The challenges to our wilderness areas The threats to environmental and human health from single-use plastics The rapid decrease in biodiversity from loss of habitat to native plants, bugs, birds, & animals The importance of increasing renewable, non-polluting forms of energy in our homes, businesses, transportation
As an all-volunteer organization, it has become clear to us that we need to hire an executive director to anchor the work of our many dedicated volunteers and propel our work ahead. So we are excited to launch a campaign to raise funds to hire our first paid staff. We have taken many 'first steps' in the work and in forming this organization in our community. This is the next big step. Please consider joining us to reach our ambitious goal of $75,000 by donating to EAC. Donations are accepted by credit card on our website Donate Button or by check mailed to: EAC P.O. Box 1172 Waynesville, NC, 28786 And thanks! |

Climate Scientist Visits Haywood County On October 6, 2023, Baker Perry, PhD, a Tuscola High School grad, spoke to over 1,000 people here in Haywood County! At noon that day, Dr. Perry spoke before a packed auditorium of 890 students at a program sponsored by EAC and hosted at Haywood Community College. And that same evening, about 170 people more attended the EAC event at First United Methodist Church. Dr. Perry, National Geographic Explorer, Appalachian State Professor, and Tuscola High School graduate has led over 20 expeditions to the Himalayas and South American mountains. He is an internationally known expert on the effect climate change is having on glaciers and the threat this poses to the 1.5 billion people in Asia and South America, who rely on those glaciers for their water supply, and who are increasingly threatened with catastrophic flooding. After an exciting media presentation to elementary, middle school, high school and college students at HCC, dozens of hands went up with questions from the young audience. Dr. Perry received a ’rock-star’ ovation! The evening program delved into many scientific issues relating to climate change. A lively question and answer session provided an opportunity to explore questions relating to issues like the instability of the high altitude Jet Stream and its effect on our own climate. The two events were supported by a grant from NASA, and hosted by Creation Care Ministry of FUMC, and Haywood Community College. |

Fontana Lake Clean Ups: Returning Campsites to the Wild I & II A generous grant from TVA enabled EAC to partner with area schools to clean up informal campsites and coves at Fontana Lake in August and September. Some 35 eager students from Shining Rock Classical Academy and Haywood Community College joined with volunteers and two TVA staff to motor by pontoon boats to the clean up sites. Students learned the seven Leave No Trace principles and after the day's work, enjoyed a satisfying swim. The total take in the two days was a whopping 7200 pounds of styrofoam, old tires, discarded & broken items, plastic, plastic, plastic, and just plain trash! Thanks to Swain County Waste Management and Recycling Center for donating the use of the roll off dumpster. In spite of the challenging work of returning the areas to their wild, natural state, tired and satisfied participants exclaimed, "can't wait for next year!" |
