CNHA Western Regional Native Hawaiian Convention

E Ala E was fortunate to send Aunty Ku`ulei and Leihua to the June 19 – 22, 2023 CNHA Convention in Las Vegas, the first convention held outside of Hawai`i. The atmosphere was full of aloha, and both felt a deep sense of place and reconnection to their culture and `āina (land). It was also a great networking opportunity to share mana`o with colleagues, make new friends, and engage in meaningful discussions regarding kuleana (responsibilities) of nā kānaka maoli (native Hawaiians). The Pop-Up Mākeke (Market) featured vendors selling Hawaiian-designed items such as clothes, bed linens, bags, shell necklaces and lauhala, to name a few!

Office of Hawaiian Affairs Blessing

On June 12, OHA hosted a reception at its new offices in Washington, D.C. E Ala E was honored to perform the Blessing Ceremony. Mahalo to Leihua and daughter, Nalei, for the beautiful oli! As most who attended were from “back home,” it was so “local” to see the entrance full of shoes and slippers! “You can take me out of Hawai`i, but you can’t take the Hawai`i out of me!”
