July, 2022 Newsletter

Happy July!

If July has a taste, for me it's the taste of black raspberries. Here in Vermont, July is when we see the first berries: first the black raspberries, then raspberries, then blueberries and blackberries. Perhaps because all the other kinds are cultivated and require a lot of work on our parts, I take special delight in the wild black raspberries and blackberries that grow in the woods around our farm. They feel like a bonus,  juicy, sun-drenched, jewel-like treasures hidden in spots where other humans (and bears) haven't yet found them. Fingers crossed you get to eat lots of berries this July.

Thank you so much to all of you for buying, borrowing, reading, recommending, and reviewing The Drowning Sea! It's been a wonderful two weeks of book events and notes from people who have read and enjoyed Maggie's third outing and wanted to let me know, or who have left reviews and ratings online. I so appreciate the support and enthusiasm!

This month, I'll be sharing a lot of reading and watching recommendations with you and also some of the reviews that have come in for The Drowning Sea. I am planning on lots of time reading, spending time with family and friends, working in the garden, continuing to tour and meet readers . . . and, of course, writing. I hope July contains some of your favorite things too and that you can find connection, peace, and meaningful action in a currently very troubled world.

All best,

Sarah

It has been really wonderful to be out on the road over the past two weeks, meeting readers and seeing old friends. Reading from The Drowning Sea at my Norwich Bookstore launch event felt especially meaningful since it was where I launched my very first published book almost, gulp, twenty years ago! Thank you to everyone who came to a virtual or in-person event and to the wonderful stores, libraries, and festivals who have hosted me. I am so grateful!

Waiting for reviews of a new book is  . . . nerve-wracking. So it's always such a relief to see some positive ones during pub week. Here are a few recent reviews of The Drowning Sea.

There are still more events!

All of the details of my events for The Drowning Sea can be found at the link below. You can get signed, personalized copies at The Norwich Bookstore, from the stores where I'll be in-person, and from Vermont and New Hampshire booksellers where I'm doing virtual events. And keep checking back because we'll be adding more over the next few weeks.

Sarah's Book Tour Details

Here's a sampling of my mystery "To Be Read" pile for the summer. I loved Carol Goodman's The Disinvited Guest (Carol and I are doing an event together on July 12th) and Paul Doiron's Hatchet Island (Paul and I have already done one event and will be doing one more later this summer). Next up is Paula Munier's The Wedding Plot (we're doing an event on July 21st) and then the rest of this stack! By the way, we have loved the Apple TV series Slow Horses, based on the novels by Mick Herron! Highly recommended!

My husband and I are celebrating twenty years of marriage this week and we're heading up to Montreal for the weekend to celebrate. We're lucky to live fairly close to the border and it's not a long trip to Quebec and its wonderful towns and cities. I've been reading and rereading to prepare for our trip and loved revisiting Louise Penny and Armand Gamache, as well as discovering this new Quebec-set series by John Farrow.

Couscous and Herb Salad

This time of year, I crave crunchy vegetable salads that I can eat straight out of the refrigerator with a big spoon. I love this Israeli couscous salad, which is perfect for bringing to barbecues or for a picnic. My tip: you can't put enough herbs in!
