Q U E S T I O N S & A N S W E R S You have worked with diverse leaders and have familiarity with executive leadership. How do you see the role of executives changing to meet the challenges of Latino Leaders? I see the role of executives in all industries, but particularly in education, to be one of inclusive pedagogy and practice. The only way to meet the challenges of Latino Leaders is to be willing to listen and adapt to changing demographics of the world. At Brio Skills we work with families of first-generation college students, which will be the most important piece of advice for families? I recommend that students keep their families informed and for both families and students to be patient with their learning curves. Although talking to campus staff is useful, only families know what they really need, so students need to remain patient as their families also go through a first-time experience. What is on your desk right now? During quarantine, my desk is my dining table, so just my computer, my cellphone, and occasionally food. Regardless of a role, what skills or strategies diverse applicants should cultivate to compete in the current job market? Applicants from underrepresented backgrounds should cultivate several skills, including communicating across differences, finding mentors in people who do not look like you, and resilience in tough times. |

Father’s day is one of the most important days of the year. Some incredible fathers work hard, love enormously, and leave a legacy. In The United States, on Sunday, June 21st, 2020 is Father’s Day. In a traditional family, a father is one of the pillars that help mothers build a solid foundation for raising a child. In some other cases, a father raises a child on his own, doing a great job. In not traditional families, one can nurture and learn values from a close father figure. Dads are numerous; many extend the figure of a father to guardians, stepfathers, and grandfathers. In higher education, a father’s commitment set an example of perseverance to their first-generation college student. Responsibility, punctuality, and resilience are key examples. At Brio Skills, a group of dads ensures punctuality, accountability, and strength by participating in every session while discussing and exchanging ideas. A dad shows a college student to be responsible for the actions made and accountable for the impact of those actions. Without a doubt, parents believe that responsibility is one of the greatest skills to develop in life. Beyond this layer of responsibility, there are powerful feelings of love. A father’s love lesson reflects in examples of how to care for others, how to help someone in need, and how to donate a little to everyone, so everyone gets something. However, a father who loves enormously sometimes is underrated because he can come across as a stubborn or a quiet person. Regardless of personality, a dad’s love does not expire, and their experiences are essential tools for achieving a goal. For a first-generation college student, becoming a professional can be a father’s best legacy. We, at Brio Skills, invite you to reflect for a few minutes about finding what is your father’s legacy. What is the lesson that will pass down from generation to generation? Your father or father figure can illuminate your path in life in a simple but important moment. This moment can be for example cooking, playing, or enjoying an afternoon. Living based on the positive legacy a father left is the best gift we, as a son or daughter, can offer to society. Fathers are strong pillars of society. Their incommensurable love is present every day, and their legacy can be present in acts of love, responsibility, and engagement. Family structures can benefit positively from traditional or non-traditional fathers. Let’s celebrate every dad and father figure with joy. At Brio Skills, we have observed with gratitude all the hard work that parents brought to every leadership session to support student academic success. We thank them all! Happy Fathers’ Day! |
