The Melton Center board is working at an accelerated pace to secure funding, zoning changes, and other support needed to construct a 51-unit affordable housing development on its campus. The project will help sustain the Melton Center while staying true to the Center's mission of serving the unmet needs of citizens marginalized by and disenfranchised from society due to economic status, race, and/or gender.
The Center is entering into a joint partnership with Church Housing Corporation and The NRP Group to create this $14-million mixed-income housing development and assimilate it into the Melton Center campus. The project includes expanded programming for existing and new residents -- to include not only the on-site gym, after-school tutoring, and summer school programs, but adult education, job training, and workforce development. The Melton Center will provide a long-term lease to Church Housing and will share in net profits.
The development will provide affordable housing for families and individuals, and for those with mobility, auditory, and visual impairments. Current plans call for one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom units ranging from 700 sf to 1,523 sf, including a 4-story, 41-unit apartment building plus ten townhomes.
A Personal Note:
As Mayor, I have received calls from distressed residents forced to leave West Chester due to rising rents and housing prices. While it goes without saying that a vibrant local economy is a top priority, we also value our economic diversity and the mix of ethnicities, religions, ages, and perspectives that make our community so culturally rich. If we are to preserve the human character of West Chester, we must ensure availability of affordably-priced housing options. The Melton Center board's bold action to raise much-needed funds for the Center, preserve the Center's legacy, and expand housing opportunities and community services for residents in need is impressive. This Wednesday Nov. 14 at 8 pm, West Chester Borough Council will consider approving a letter of support for the project. Click here for the agenda and additional information.
