Dear Southlake Neighbors,

 

As I write this it is the last day of July. I know it’s been a hot and busy month, but I’ll try to do a better job in August to let you know what is going on with your association. During July we finally got the entire irrigation system on Southlake Parkway functioning, probably for the first time in many years. I hope you think the median looks better too after removing all the pear trees and improving the maintenance of the open areas.

Our board member in charge of communications, John Gomillion, has started working on updates and improvements for the www.southlakehoover.com web site. Please check it out as John makes progress. If you have any suggestions or requests, please send them to southlakedirectors@gmail.com.

Some of our Estates neighbors have noticed and expressed concern that there are several Southlake short-term home rentals advertised on Airbnb and VRBO. Do you think this is a problem? Currently, there are no City of Hoover or Southlake Residential Association restrictions on this type of activity. The Board of Directors is looking into modifying our covenants to add reasonable restrictions. Please let us know if you think this is an activity that should be prohibited in Southlake. We’re open to ideas and suggestions.

 Repeating from last month’s letter, the City of Hoover has a new citywide beautification committee. We would like to have as many Southlake residents as possible on the committee so please go to http://hooveralabama.gov/160/Beautification-Board to download an application. This is a new board under Hoover’s mayor so it should be a good venue to get more done for Southlake. I’ve applied and hope that some of you will join me in submitting applications.

The Board of Directors is considering sponsoring a community workday sometime during the fall. I know that some of the neighborhoods have done this in the past with great success. Please watch future editions of this letter (and the web site) for more details on this and how you can get involved.
