the weekly Round-Up

Hello!  Been a busy week, so let's get right to the news.

  • The beginning of June is usually a buzzing time for the hotel industry with leaders gathering at the annual NYU International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference, this year the onsite program has been pushed to November due to COVID, but there were virtual panels this week and the mood was hopeful coming off of a robust Memorial Day weekend.
    • Key takeaways from the "state of the industry" panel with CEOs of Accor, BWH Hotel Group, Hilton, IHG, and Marriott:
      • Pent-up demand has leisure travel is booming and rates are strong.
      • Major cities still lag in the recovery and will take 6 - 9 months to come back.
      • Business travel is starting to show signs of coming back.
      • The labor shortage has moved from a concern to a crisis.
      • Development Summary: financing for new-build hotels has been tight during the pandemic, so growth is happening from hotel conversions, not many distressed deals as in the last crisis.
    • Key takeaways from the "adapting to change" panel moderated by Gilda Perez-Alvarado, CEO of JLL Hotels & Hospitality with CEOs from Choice Hotels International, Radisson Hotel Group, Remington Hotels, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts:
      • leisure travelers are younger than ever before, need to market to them differently.
      • trips are having a longer length of stay.
      • more "experience seekers" wanting to sample local culture and cuisine.
  • Women in Travel Thrive held their second Day of Impact with a series of fantastic panels and presentations which you can watch on their YouTube channel.
    • Two panels on "allyship" with male leaders in the industry speaking about influential women in their careers, what needs to change for gender parity, and what YOU can do to improve your chances of success. I moderated the second of these panels and was so impressed by their thoughtfulness and inspiring insights.
    • How to Be a Badass at Work and at Life was fantastic, filled with useful tips, moderated by Carrie Fabris of Careerframe.  Who doesn't want to be a badass?  Watch this!
  • One conference that has managed to go ahead IN PERSON, the G7 in beautiful Cornwall, with the main topic of discussion "a stronger global health system that can protect us all from future pandemics" and the possible opening of a UK and US travel corridor.
  • Finally, this CoStar article on how hotel companies are making progress promoting women leaders in Southeast Asia is worth a read. Park Hotel Group and Accor boast more than 45% female leadership thanks to permanent hybrid work arrangements and leadership development programs.

Here's what happened on hertelier:

  • An exciting first for us, we interview a former Olympian! The Zimmerman Agency CEO, Carrie Zimmerman was the first woman to ever score a perfect 10 on the floor exercise in gymnastics, read how she uses the same dedication and discipline learned in sports as an entrepreneur.
  • We started the week super excited about the Women in Travel Thrive "Day of Impact" and chatted with founder Silvia Camarota.
  • She Has a Deal (SHaD) had their final pitch competition, here's the scoop  from grand prize winner of $50,000 in seed money, Emma Claire Spring, who hadn't studied finance before participating in this wonderful program by Tracy Prigmore.
  • As more and more of us head back into the office, advice columnist Nancy Mendelson discusses coping with quarantine weight gain!  In that same vein, the Wall Street Journal and LinkedIn consider: should dress codes for the office be relaxed post-pandemic? Have you changed how you dress for work?

We welcome your feedback, concerns, and especially your questions.  If you have any questions about your job (or life) send them to Nancy (nancy@nemglobal.com).  Benefit from her years of experience and therapy!
