Neuroplasticity, Universal Design for Learning, Practice Creates the Master

Happy '360' Friday! Here are this week's resources, quote, and question.

Student Resource

Neuroplasticity

This 3-minute video provides a clear explanation of neuroplasticity, or how we build neural pathways through learning. As the video explains "...our most complex organ is capable of changing throughout our lives. This inspiring animation demonstrates how we all have the ability to learn and change by rewiring our brains."

Student Tip

After watching the video, think about how much time you dedicate to practicing something that you want to get better at. Remember that each time you practice, you are building a path, and maybe even a superhighway, that leads to improvement and confidence. Also, keep in mind that each time you dedicate time to doing something that's not helpful, your brain also builds neural pathways that reinforce that negative action or behavior. We are what we practice!

Teacher Resource

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

UDL is an instructional research-based model that promotes diverse strategies and sensory inputs to meet the needs of all learners. In this overview of UDL for ELLs, Universal Design for Learning: Classrooms that Support International and English Language Learners examples are provided across the following:

  • Engagement: Ex. leveraging students’ interests, experiences, interests, and cultures

  • Representation: Ex. scaffolding materials, teaching students learning strategies, etc.

  • Expression: Ex. allowing diverse ways of expressing knowledge, providing feedback and revision, etc.

Teacher Tip

Go over the document Universal Design for Learning: Classrooms that Support International and English Language Learners as a checklist to see how many of the examples of UDL you are applying, as well as to get some additional ideas you could apply with your students.

“You don't need to justify your love, you don't need to explain your love, you just need to practice your love. Practice creates the master.”

Question

How much time do you dedicate to do the thing(s) you love to do?

Until next week,
