Tea Leaves

Time for a fresh start

A very very short and sweet newsletter today, and I'm already one day so my apologies! For the last month I've been taking it easy and trying to enjoy the last few weeks of relative calm before the newest addition to our Teacup family arrives. For that reason, I decided to skip most of the sections for this month's newsletter, but will be back to normal at the end of April.

Thank you so much to everyone who provided feedback last month! I really appreciate your input and it has given me a lot of

useful information to work with in order to grow and develop The Archaeologist's Teacup. Wheels are in motion, and even though the next few months will be a bit quieter over here as I adjust to our new family, there are exciting things coming up so stay tuned and, as always, watch this space!

Tea-break Time Travel

When is a drum not a drum? When it's a Folkton Drum! In this episode I chat with photographer, videographer, and archaeological replica-maker Emma Jones all about these fascinating objects. How much do we really know about the people who created these drums? What insights can we gain from replicating them ourselves? Why are children always forgotten? And if you think you have difficulty making your eyebrows even, imagine the issues of trying to carve them into chalk...

The EXARC Show

This month I chatted with two giants in experimental archaeology all about the previous and upcoming EXARC conferences. Make sure to visit the podcast homepage to listen in this coming Friday and hear all about what to expect, and how experimental archaeology has developed over time.

You can also now listen in to the fourth installment of EXARC Extracts, where I provide a short summary of the Winter 2022 edition of the EXARC Journal. Check out both the podcast and journal here.

Archaeo Book Club

In March we celebrated Women's History Month by reading Women of the Dunes by Sarah Maine. And, excitingly, tomorrow we will be having a live chat and Q&A session with Sarah herself over on our community Discord server! If you haven't already, you can join our server for all kinds of fun chats and upcoming events through the link below.

We have also now chosen our next book in the theme "poetry": We will be reading Beowulf by Maria Dahvana Headley.

For those who are also interested in writing their own archaeology-inspired fiction (or any other kind of writing really), we also have bi-weekly meetups in Scribbler's Corner, where we share tips and tricks for writing, give feedback on pieces that other members have submitted, and just generally offer support.

The idea behind the Archaeo Book Club was to create an online community of people who are interested in the past but also share a love of books and reading. It's open to anyone, and you can sign up through the link below. I hope to see you there!
