Barn Talk

Welcome to Spring

I can’t believe how fast this year is flying and before we know it will be Christmas.

I have to say I have been so excited with Geronimo who is starting to recover nicely. Just for all you to know, some injuries take longer to heal than we want but at the end, all we want is a horse who is happy that we can enjoy, so really time is nothing to pay for what we get back in return. I have below done a little case study on him and how long and where to now.

It is getting to that time again when some of us will be getting the little foal fairy coming. Please remember if you have a mare you suspect that they are in foal let me know and by the way like humans new mums love to be pampered so consider a massage once your mare has had her foal.  It is also never too early for a foal to have a massage so if you can halter them and mum is not too foal proud they too can get one. The stimulation of the systems are magical and great for their growth and mental health.

Please don’t forget that I can come out on weekends, you just need to message me. I understand how hard it is when you work full time 9-5. It is always a struggle to find services now that do the weekends without extra charge.

In my world a lot has been happening behind the scenes and I can share that with you all in this update. A  lot of people think the body work is only needed when something goes wrong but you know what that is not the case. Just like us we need to look after our mental state as well as our body. Thinking of that in mind and how budgets are tight I am commencing a maintenance program that will run for 6 months. More later in this newsletter. I am offering it to you first just speaking in the barn with friends!

Other than that ride on …… Stay safe and be happy

NEW MAINTENANCE CLUB PROGRAM:

Horse season is almost upon us when we get out and ride and interact with our horses so much more, including for some of us competing. Your horse needs to be in top shape both mentally and physically.

Same goes for our own horses at home who are there as our family members whether it is pleasure riding or just something to love.

We schedule regularly the farrier, the horse dentist, worming & strangles injection but how many times do you treat the body?

So what is the benefits of the maintenance program:

  • You are proactive in prevention of injuries or issues

  • This alone means you get to compete more and enjoy the riding.

  • Your horse gets more range of movement (ROM) and all systems within the body is treated

  • More well balanced horse both body and mind

  • You get the treatment at a discount and regular and it becomes part of the overall health plan of your horse

  •  It is a cheaper option than adhoc treatments!

So what is involved:

  • 6 months commitment

  •  Option of 4 – 6 – 8 week sessions

  • Regular booking with one cancellation allowed per sign up

  • Access to a member maintenance page

  • Discount treatments

  •  10% off products

  • Zoom access to me 2 times out of treatment times

  • Priority booking

  • Deposit of $75 which is refundable* See T & Cs

 *T&C-

  • Session bookings: Must stipulate what frequency the sessions are, ability to reschedule within a week of due date

  • Sessions are not transferable to another horse

  • Cancellation: 1 cancellation no reason.  If more than one cancellation you will forgo your deposit

  • At the end of the 6 months period if no cancellations you will receive the $75 deposit back, alternatively you can roll it over for another 6 months period.

So how much do you save?

Have a look at the table below. This is taking into consideration that the initial cost of coming to your horse was just a one off and the treatments were related when in truth that might not be the case you may have to pay the initial come out fee more.

Long Road to Recovery

Geronimo or as I like to call him G man had his torn tendon back on 11th October 2021 and has just recently started trotting. At first no matter what he wouldn’t trot because he was still recovering and the scarring which needed to occur had not completely healed enough to support him in the ability to do his gaits. We realistically have another 6-7 months for now recovery work to get all of his muscles fit again to support the change. I will be sharing a video on my web page in the next few weeks showing you how he steps over a raised pole. What I am trying to let you know is that some injuries do take a long time and it is not just one treatment or treatment type and sometimes it is a waiting game.

So we will be working on him learning to lift his legs for clearance, building muscle and stamina as well getting his confidence back.

Warm Up Exercises for the Back.

These are great exercises for those horses who have had an injury but fully healed and now need to build and continue to release their back / top line muscles. DO NOT do these if your horse has a fresh injury - unless I have tailored them for your horse’s injury.

  1. Backing up - I can not say this one enough. It is not only a great tool for getting horses to focus but it releases those muscles . So walk your horse backwards approx 30 steps if possible on an incline that is gradual and do not rush the horse back it should be a smooth, steady pace with the neck in a lower position.

  2. Lead your horse around in a small 8-10 mtr circle going the same amount of circles for each side, getting them to bend in the middle and keep their neck low.

You can do these for a few weeks and then we will in the next Barn talk about where to go from here.
