Congratulations to Kevin Bokoum! The Governor appointed Kevin Bokoum of North Hagerstown High School in Washington County as the 2021-2022 student member on the State Board of Education. Kevin stated, "I am beyond excited and honored to be appointed by Governor Hogan to serve as Student Member of the State Board of Education (SMOB). This is a great honor that I do not take lightly. I will always listen to the students' voice and strive to ensure every policy I vote on and introduce has the ideals of equity and excellence embedded wholeheartedly into it." MASC would also like to thank Jason Wu, the immediate past state SMOB, for his service to the students of Maryland. Mr. Wu, attending Emory University this fall leaves us with these parting words. "This year we've overcome a set of unprecedented challenges together, from tackling online school to finding innovative ways to stay connected virtually. As a hopeful end to this pandemic nears and we return back to schools next year, I hope we can carry forward the lessons we have learned from this pandemic and continue advocating for a school system that works for all of our peers. Today, I am proud to pass the mantle to Kevin and could not be more exciting to see the great work he will do. Thank you for entrusting me to serve as your SMOB!

MASC would appreciate it if regional advisors or the above-listed students complete the google form for our records. We understand that some regions may currently have "acting" officers until a fall election is possible. Please let us know that information as the acting officers would still be voting members of MASC's executive board.

Resource: Special Funding This last year has changed the landscape of education and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic still linger as schools attempt to navigate returning to full-time, in-person learning and a “new normal.” Schools are dealing with an increase in trauma, stress, and anxiety, along with learning loss from less supported instructional time. To help address these needs, Congress passed three stimulus bills providing over $190 billion to the Elementary and Secondary Emergency Education Relief (ESSER) fund.
