Spring into action and restore your gut function with the 6-R Framework. Learn how Functional Nutrition Counselors help people live well with autoimmune disease and heal their digestive and mental health issues using this approach.

A reminder that I provide meal planning assistance which is a less intensive and expensive service than my in depth case review. These support services focuses on helping clients who need assistance in adhering to a dietary protocol prescribed by their treating physician or need extra motivation to explore the health benefits of a whole food diet and need some guidance. I have a wide variety of recipes so you don't get bored eating the same meals all the time. Everybody's heard the buzz words around reducing inflammation when struggling with chronic health conditions. A whole food diet will do that and improve your health. I offer the experience of my certification training to encourage adhering to a low inflammatory diet that will yield positive results. My extensive background in mental health counseling brings a non-judgmental and empathetic approach to my functional nutrition counseling practice.

And as an autoimmune warrior myself, I am poised to coach on the level of a peer who's been there and knows the struggles of making dietary and lifestyle changes given the Standard American Diet and quick fix culture.

I also share my microgreen growing win. Spring is the ideal time to cleanse your liver of all the heavier foods and sedentary lifestyle of winter. Toxins accumulate in your fat cells which makes it difficult for your liver to do its job. During this transition into spring our livers are working extra hard to process the excessive toxic exposures of our times. Spring is the season of regeneration. Microgreens pack a massive, concentrated nutritional punch of antioxidants and vitamins—up to 40 times higher than mature greens.

The 6R’s Guidelines to Gut Health Restoration: Remove, Replace, Reinoculate, Repair, Rebalance and Regulate

Since most people aren’t really aware of how Functional Nutrition can help heal chronic health conditions I thought I'd walk my readers through the framework I use as a Certified Functional Nutrition Counselor to foster healing through gut health restoration. It's called the 6-R framework. If you've been following me long enough you now know that digestive imbalances can impact the immune system, sleep, blood sugar balance, metabolism, heart disease, mental health and skin health.

Remove the Instigators:

At the beginning of this process, we eliminate common allergens and recognized stressors. Depending on the client’s requirements and starting point, substances such as processed sugar/foods, caffeine, alcohol, gluten, and dairy might be excluded. Additionally, environmental elements like stress, unfiltered water, chemicals in household items, and personal care products are taken into account. The goal is to eliminate anything that could have a detrimental effect on the microbiome, digestion, or motility.

Replace the Missing Factors:

We Introduce foods rich in essential digestive elements such as fiber, nutrients, and water concurrently. Supporting digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid aids in effective food breakdown and absorption. Emphasizing thorough chewing ensures food is sufficiently broken down for smooth progression through the digestive system.

Reinoculate with Good Bacteria:

Consuming probiotic supplements and probiotic-rich foods can assist in replenishing the colon with beneficial bacteria. Furthermore, prebiotic foods and supplements support the growth of beneficial bacteria by providing them with essential nourishment. Consider incorporating ferments, resistant starch, and foods rich in polyphenols into your diet.

Repair the Gut Lining:

Gut hyperpermeability, commonly known as “leaky gut,” occurs when there are weak connections between the cell walls in the gut lining. These openings can enable tiny particles and waste to pass through the lining into the bloodstream. Maintaining the integrity of these junctions is crucial to address gut issues. Consuming antioxidant-rich foods and l-glutamine can help strengthen the connections, while aloe, slippery elm, and marshmallow are known to soothe the gut tissue.

Rebalance:

To restore balance, we evaluate and tackle the lifestyle factors that can either hinder or enhance digestive function. This includes focusing on sleep, physical activity, stress management, and social connections.

Regulate:

For sustained success we regulate and evaluate what is effective, make adjustments as needed, monitor progress, and repeat the process. It's an ongoing, dynamic connection with our gut. Assess, recommend and track is the motto used in functional nutrition as course correction is often needed when uncovering the roots of what is causing gut mediated conditions.

Microgreen Beginnings

I'm so excited that we harvested our first indoor Broccoli microgreens. We thought the first two batches had mold on them, but after doing a little research discovered that it was the baby roots that looked like mold.

Microgreens are good sources of minerals. Calcium: Important for bone health (think ospteopenia and osteoporosis) and muscle function. Iron (think anemia): Essential for oxygen transport and energy production. Potassium: Helps maintain fluid balance, nerve function, and heart health. Microgreens are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals vital in detoxification. These tiny greens help neutralize harmful free radicals and assist combating oxidative stress and the liver in flushing out toxins from the body.

I'm going to do a spring cleanse to support the liver in eliminating toxins built up over the winter holidays and helps with regular circulation and energy. I can feel the spring energy underfoot. Can you? Let's cleanse the liver.
