Research Insights: Empowering Women's Health

Depression: Fluctuations in mood during perimenopause and menopause are a widespread but often overlooked phenomenon. Estrogen, a key player in mood regulation within the brain, collaborates closely with serotonin, often referred to as the "happy hormone." For some women, the delicate balance of estrogen during perimenopause and menopause can significantly impact their mood, particularly if their brains are particularly sensitive to these hormonal shifts, placing them at a heightened risk for mood disturbances.

Furthermore, women with a history of anxiety or depression face an increased risk of a recurrence during this transitional phase. Addressing these mood changes involves a range of treatment options, including the use of antidepressants such as SSRIs or SNRIs, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and the consideration of estrogen therapy. Notably, certain studies suggest that combining estradiol with an SSRI or SNRI may yield more favorable results than either treatment alone. This nuanced approach reflects the evolving understanding of how these interventions can synergistically enhance effectiveness and provide comprehensive support during this significant life stage.

Favorite Place: Bourbon Street Barrel Room

Anna's pick: If you're looking for an escape from our typical Cleveland January winter days...keep historic Tremont's The Bourbon Street Barrel Room in mind. The atmosphere and food will take you on an adventure New Orleans style. I recommend the Joi De Vie! aka Joy of Life Sampler Trio as your meal. You will be able to pick from gumbo, jambalaya, fried okra, ratatouille, traditional red beans & rice or amazing hush puppies to name a few.  We were seated upstairs overlooking beautiful chandeliers and the lower level. As they say in Louisiana, Laissez les bons temps rouler~let the good times roll!

"A few our favorite things:" V Magic moisturizer

Rachel's pick: My patients are the ones who told me about this and the ones I’ve told subsequently have all loved it, too! One patient came back to the office saying, “All women need this!” I love that it’s all natural ingredients and I’ve never been told that someone had an allergic reaction to it.

What we are reading:

"Better Sex Through Mindfulness: How Women Can Cultivate Desire" by Lori A. Brotto, PhD

Jean's pick: Low desire represents the most prevalent diagnosis among the various conditions encompassed by Female Sexual Dysfunction. Dr. Brotto, a pioneering researcher in the field, has dedicated her efforts to exploring the efficacy of mindfulness meditation as a potent tool for addressing sexual dysfunction. In her book, she delves into the intricacies of her research and unveils how this transformative practice has proven to be a source of empowerment for countless women.

Mindfulness, as elucidated by Dr. Brotto, guides women toward embracing the fullness of each moment, steering clear of the distraction of future concerns or lingering on past negative experiences. The practice encourages acknowledgment and acceptance of negative emotions, fostering the ability to process and then transcend such emotions. Central to its effectiveness is its capacity to redirect focus towards sensations, allowing individuals to be authentically present.

Dr. Brotto's therapeutic approach aims at instilling a nonjudgmental, moment-to-moment awareness in her patients. Through this, she seeks to facilitate the cultivation of sexual desire and arousal, promoting a connection with one's own sensuality.
