Serving up all our latest updates!

ACES AND PLACES

• A great presentation from Mark and Leila from Club Sponsor On The Green saw the Wednesday Men's Shed boys giving the reformer a go. They might have even converted a few!

• Super-Junior Aidan Chan finished as runner up in the 12&U Doubles Nationals with partner Tommy Camus. He also made the Singles finals, dropping only one match to the eventual winner. Karin Hiramatsu was there in Adelaide too, winning 3 of her 5 Singles matches. Great job, Juniors!

• Lily Fairclough took a wildcard entry to the ITF Pro Tour event at the State Tennis Centre and Ella Nurkic played in the doubles with Jessie Culley, making it through to the quarter finals!

• James Williams and Roger Nicholas teamed up their milestone birthdays this month, celebrating together with tennis and cake. And, of course, as tradition dictates, a delicious lunch at Club Sponsor Globe Coffee House.

• Bob Wegner and Mike McLean rocked out together at the recent Delta Goodrem concert and Caitlyn, Georgia and Kira Napier are off to Sydney to see Taylor Swift. Colin was devastated to miss out on a ticket.

• Now that the weather is warming up again, we have seen lots of our holiday-makers returning from their northern adventures: Peter and Alis Woods have returned from their 4 month road trip, Chris Clark is back from Europe, Graeme and Jane Rundle are home after cycling their way around the northern hemisphere and Debbie Napier has just returned from Osaka after a stint as an international lineswoman at the Japan Open.

• Heading in the other direction, Ian and Cathy Hutchison are embarking on a cruise around New Zealand while Peter and Sandi Cooke are also overseas.

• Get down to the Wednesday Men's Shed Social Tennis to stock up on all your citrus needs thanks to Ross Collard and his fantastically fruity trees!

• A cheerio to Tony Tarzia who is recovering from a leg injury but still managing to get to lawn bowls, and also to former member Rob Tuffin who is recovering from open heart surgery. Shout out if you need anything, boys!

• We welcome back Club Sponsors A J Cochrane & Son (for all your painting needs!). Good to have you back guys!

• With the return of the warmer weather, we have been cranking up our weekends again with our Fun Friday and Junior TERMinator events. The first one got off to a soggy start but with mini tournaments, Pickleball tryout sessions, kid's movie screenings, music, the Lombardi Sausage Sizzle, food and the bar up and running, they have been great nights. Join us for the next Fun Friday on Oct 20 from 4pm!

• Welcome to our newest members: Namrata Makhijani, Sam Manson, James Anderson, Tala Favell, Jamie Kendall, Emily Daglish, Gabriella Jakowetz, Jason Howard, and returning member Bhamini Shrivastava!

HPTC AWARDS NIGHT

What a night!

With everyone dressed up in their Black, White and Gold finest, the 2023 Awards Night was a sparkling celebration of all the best moments of the 2022-2023 tennis year.

We were treated to an amazing spread of food provided by Teramo Catering and Dominos Victoria Park, the kids watched a movie in the new CPS Movie Theatre and everyone enjoyed some drinks and catchups with mates.

Jess Moore and James Connelly took the stage for an interesting and inspiring talk about Jess's incredible career as a multiple Junior Grand Slam winner and her times and travels as the Australian Junior Team Coach.

Awards were presented for Hensman Honour Boards, League Shield Winners and MVPs, and the new Hensman Values Awards.

Lexie Soklich drew the Club Raffle, with Mel Weaver taking home the grand prize of a $2,500 Sokolich and Co jewellery voucher!

Thankyou to the Club Sponsors who donated prizes for the raffle which helped the Club raise over $5,000: HPH Solutions, Team Tennis WA, Preston St IGA, The Karalee, Bax Chiropractic and On The Green Sports Physiotherapy and Reformer Pilates.

Extra special thanks to event and Club Sponsor Soklich and Co for presenting a fabulous evening!

MEMBER PROFILE

PETER AND ALICE WOODS

Peter was born in Melbourne in the middle of WW2, his birth delaying the ship that was carrying troops, including his dad, for jungle training in Queensland before going to Papua New Guinea to fight the Japanese. According to his dad, Peter was all red and wrinkled, screaming like mad and not worth the wait!

Peter grew up in Loxton in South Australia's Riverland area, where an irrigation scheme was built to service fruit blocks that were established by returning soldiers.

After graduating from Adelaide university in 1965 as a Civil Engineer, he worked in Adelaide and Melbourne

before applying for a job in PNG. Over the next 10 years, his two children, Nicole and Trent were born, but when his marriage sadly ended, Peter bought the kids to live in Perth before setting off again, this time for Singapore, working on projects all around Asia.

Rochalis, or Alis as we know and love her, was born in West Java, Indonesia, the youngest of seven children. She attended a Catholic high school where she learned Dutch, English and Bahasa but also spoke Sundanese (the local West Java dialect) at home.

After high school, she went into banking where she spent many years. It was during this time that she met Peter at friend’s wedding in Jakarta. Overcoming their language difficulties by "using lots of sign language", the couple

moved to Perth where they were married in 1989 and built a house in Willetton. After returning again to Jakarta in 1991 their two boys Prawi and Shane were born.

The family finally returned to Perth in January 2003.

Alis and Peter Joined the club about 15 years ago.

They are both very active Social Tennis players, attending all of the sessions they can!

Peter was Grounds and Hall director at the Club from 2015 to 2018.

Peter and Alis are keen caravaners and fisher-people and, like all heat-loving tennis tragics, spend their Winters in Broome.
