The March-ish wrap

Tackling energy on the road to netzero

Over March and April, Mid Green Family tackled energy use and got a bit distracted making sure our Jan (food & compost) and Feb (fashion) habits stuck after the great fly infestation - read on for my composting woes, and a Harry Potter night out (requiring new robes).

What We Got Up To

Our March theme was tackling energy usage. We had a big headstart on this theme back before Christmas when I installed solar panels. We learned that energy for heating, cooling, and for heating water makes up more than 60% of a household's electricity use - Mr 8 volunteered to not have showers (super helpful😂).

I used this focus on energy to get better at making sure dishwashers, washing machines and even charging devices was happening when the sun was shining, and to tighten up a bit on standby power for things like the kettle and TV. We played some fun experiments turning things on and off then using our PV app to work out how much electricity things used. Turning on every light upstairs was 0.7kW, so if we left them on the whole day that could almost be a day's worth of electricity in autumn!

We had some drama with our compost getting too wet and breeding a swarm of flies that managed to find there way into the house thorugh a tear in the flyscreen - gross!

We were challenged in our goal of no new fashion, as the desire to dress up for Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows with WASO proved too much. We are selling on the kid's robes but it was a minor fall off the no new fashion wagon. My witch outfit was fully home-sourced though!

The final verdict on our progress - we are on track to more than halve our electricity-related carbon footprint from 2tCO2e to <1tCO2e, if we can keep the heating down over Winter and keep up our good habits!

The snapshot

Globally, electricity use in residential buildings accounts for about 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Here in Australia, we have almost three times the global average carbon footprint per person, as much as 15-17t CO2e on average per year (depending on your source), with your household energy footprint making up a big chunk of that.

For Mid Green, our annual electricity baseline was 2tCO2e (2.6kWh of electricity usage), although the average Australian householder is generally closer to 4tCO2e per year (or 5.2kWh of electricity usage).

Solar panels are making a huge difference (40-60% depending on the month) in our bill compared to last year, although we have also found some energy savings from shifting when we use electricity to the daytime (including charging personal devices), using eco settings on major appliances and turning off standby power.

These last two months Mid Green got a little distracted pondering why more of us aren't jumping up and down wanting to change our ways to support the future of our planet.

Does every person make a difference? I truly believe that western lifestyles are a major contributor to climate change.

If we are in a position to make decisions, or lobby or influence decisions (at home, work or in the community) around -

  • energy use,

  • where energy comes from, how it is purchased or stored,

  • the amount of waste we create or how things are recycled,

  • how goods and/or people are transported,

  • impact on nature, including waterways or biodiversity,

then we can be a change for good.
