Hiking Grays and Torreys - Two of Colorado's 14er Peaks:

MAC members will be in Colorado during the second week of September 2022 hiking Grays and Torreys. Working to summit a 14er (a peak over 14,000 feet) is a perfect melding of a physical challenge (the common saying is that there are no easy 14ers), mental sharpening (the preparation requires a good deal of planning, research, and positive self talk), social interactions (having people who participate in the challenge makes it more fun and provides a happy balance of accountability and support), and awe (the rewards of being high on a mountain is a special treat).

This will be our second annual trek. You can read my salute to September 2021 trekkers. Fingers crossed that all goes well this September.

Member adventures

  1. Helga and her son and daughter summited Breithorn, a mountain range on the border between Switzerland and Italy.

  2. Michael visited Yosemite Falls, California. This one of the world's tallest waterfalls. Michael hiked up to the top where he could see the water cross the rim.

  3. Ashton started collecting plants a few months ago and is up to 22 plants including fresh herbs, lemon and a lime tree. Her current adventure is learning about them and research how to get them to thrive.

  4. Bracken did rock climbing at Square Ledge in New Hampshire. He reports that the rock is great for beginners because it provides excellent friction for the feet. The top of Square Ledge offers super views of Tuckerman Ravine and the Presidential Range.

  5. Ron hiked the Franconia Ridge Trail in the White Mountains of New Hampshire with his grandkids. The hike offers some of the best views in New England, including this magical waterfall

  6. Nick explored the Huntington Ravine route of Mt Washington. Views are spectacular ... the trail is somewhat sketchy.

You can read more about these adventures on MAC Slack. And, if you have a chance, add your adventure photos there.

Bike Ride on Katy Trail

MAC members did a 30 mile out-and-back ride recently. The ride started at Defiance MO and headed west on the Katy Trail. The turn-around point was at Hwy 94. Fortunately the wind was at our backs both ways (Armando reports that helpful wind is always present when he bikes).

A social at the Good New Brewery was a nice ending to a great day. Thanks to Chris, Chuck, and Chuck for organizing.

Annapoorna: A High Schooler who started a Medallion Club in India

This past May I taught in the Wash U EMBA program in Mumbai India. To expose the students to more of the nuances of Indian accounting, the Mumbai administrators arranged for a guest speaker. The speaker's name was Viji Narayan and she offered a great lecture. After the class Viji and I met and became quick friends. In the course of our conversation, she indicated that she had a high school daughter, Annapoorna who was interested in going to a university in the US. It was arranged that Annapoorna and I would talk when I got back to the states.

Annapoorna and I talked several times and she participated in several MAC Books and Ideas zoom calls. I was impressed with her comments and insights on these calls, as were others, but I was totally amazed when I read her last email:

Our school has recently started an Adventure Club, which I have joined both as a member and an executive organizer.

Our first adventure was an overnight practice journey near my school where we learnt basic skills like building a tent, making a campfire, etc. We also did various team building activities and exercises like rock-climbing. We are planning to go for the actual journey sometime next month. This was my first experience in outdoor adventures and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Not just that, I also developed some  new skills and made new friends.

As a virtual member of the Medallion Adventure Club 8000 miles away, I am glad to fulfill the adventure aspect of MAC in my own way. Part of why I participated was the inspiration from the recent activities the MAC did in the US and I am thankful for that. I have attached some photos of the journey.

WOW! Kudos to Anapoorna for inspiring her schoolmates to be adventurers and sharing these great photos. It's exciting to see our MAC community expanding to the other side of the world.

Thanks for your interest in this MAC newsletter. Please let me know if you

  • have anything you would like included in the next MAC newsletter

  • would like to be added to the newsletter mailing list or you know of someone who would like to be added

I can be reached at Ron@MedallionAdventureClub.com or a text in MAC Slack.
