Deep Presence in Uncertain Times

Uncertainty. It is the thing our ego most loathes. Uncertainty can leave us feeling vulnerable, exposed, fragile--all qualities that the ego works overtime to avoid. And you know what, in this respect the ego is our friend. It wants us to feel safe, secure and measured in our lives. And we need those qualities, to varying degrees, to be functional human beings. So what do we do now that our world has been thrust into highly volatile and uncertain times? How do we create the grounding we all need to maintain a modicum of sanity when the very ground beneath us is shaky?

I've been wrestling with this conundrum for the past few weeks. Weeks where, in addition to the shelter-in-place mandates and subsequent loss of income so many of us are experiencing, I have also had to deal with a couple of heavy losses--a vandalized (and totaled) car and the death of my cat familiar. To be honest these past few weeks have felt a lot like being adrift in the ocean, buffeted on all sides by insurmountable waves as I try to just keep my head above the water.

And yet, in the midst of all the loss, grief, and chaos, I've discovered something miraculous. I've found that if I let myself dive deep beneath those waves, underneath the surface there is a calm, a stillness in the quiet depths of my being. Now I may have to dive super deep sometimes to find that calm, but it is there--that unshakable part of me which is sometimes called the witness or wisdom consciousness. And its not just in me, we all have this aspect inside of us. Its the part of you that finally gives up trying to control everything and just surrenders to what is--sometimes with curiosity, sometimes begrudgingly. But trust me, it is there.

And the way that I'm currently getting to it? My breath. Slow, intentional breath. The kind you do when you're laying in savasana at the end of a yoga class. And in that breath-space I often find eternity, an I AM Presence. One of the ways I've begun to cultivate this Presence is each day upon waking I lay in bed and breathe--slow, long, full-bodied breaths--and in this breathing style I check in with my body. Where are my emotions sitting inside of me? How do I feel? What and where am I holding too tightly? And then I breathe into those places inviting more space, more presence in and around them.

It's reminded me of a meditation technique that I trained in over 15 years ago. It was taught to me by a Sufi practitioner who instructed us to use it 30 days in a row to get the full benefit of the practice. I was going through an emotionally challenging time back then as well, and so I took on the 30 day practice. By the end of the 30 days I had such powerful shifts in my psycho-emotional body that I made a recording and began sharing it with my students and clients (with my teacher's permission of course!) as a guided visualization Mp3.

So I'm dusting off this recording and offering it to you as my gift to your well-being during this challenging time. Just follow this link to the Energy Balancing Meditation and you can download it to practice on your own.

Energy Balancing Meditation

In the recording I guide you step-by-step through the process. It only takes about 30 minutes and is easy to follow. The key is to take this on as a daily practice, ideally first thing in the morning before you go about your day, as part of your psycho-emotional self-care and energy body maintenance. And lets face it, now that we're quarantined inside for at least another 30 days, what better time to try it out? So I'm inviting us all to take this on together for the next 30 days as we shelter-in-place together.

To get you started, I will be going live on Facebook tomorrow, April 1 at 11am PST/2pm EST, where I'll be teaching this meditation so folks can get the transmission in real time and ask questions. If you'd like to participate, just go to my Facebook Live link below tomorrow at 11am to join in.

Who knows, by the end of this quarantine we may all discover we've evolved the ability to breathe under water into the depths of our own being!

With all my blessings for your well-being,

Dr. Megan Rose
