COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR CITY FARM

The month of May brought announcements about Grants. City Farm SLO is grateful to announce the award of a Grant for our 2019-2020 Farm School Programs from the Janssen Youth and Sports Fund administered through the Community Foundation of San Luis Obispo County.

We also received tentative approval for an award from the City of SLO Promotional Coordinating Committee that will help us kick off plans for our third annual Fall Harvest Festival scheduled for October 20 2019. Stay tuned for specifics.

We have embarked upon a fundraising campaign to help maintain our expanding program of activities at City Farm and to hire staff to support our largely volunteer operated organization. We welcome donations through our website, cityfarmslo.org and your inquiries about participation at any level through info@cityfarmslo.org.

"ON THE FARM" HIGHLIGHTS

45 kindergartners, their teachers and family members from Lillian Larsen Elementary School in San Miguel visited City Farm SLO on May 10, learned about food plant parts, planted radishes, fed chickens, made flower bracelets under the direction of educator Teresa Lees, volunteer docents, tenant farmer Javier Magana who addressed them in English and Spanish.

In accordance with their Grade 2 Next Generation Curriculum Standards, students from Los Ranchos and Bishops Peak Schools learned about pollination, fertilization, reproduction, and germination with games, songs, and investigation of flowers and bugs in the fields.

INFRASTRUCTURE

City Farm’s solar array became operational during the month of May and all users enjoyed watching the meter run backward. We’ll be closely monitoring the actual savings on irrigation electricity in coming months.

PREPARE

Our Horticultural Therapy class with PREPARE (Pre-vocation Recreation Education Productive Adult Readiness Experience) has been meeting weekly at City Farm for the last four years. Teamwork activities this month included setting melon and squash seeds for germination, planting and mulching the seedlings that emerged, cooking up broccoli and making friends with the chickens.

PACIFIC BEACH CONTINUATION HIGH SCHOOL GARDEN

Spring has Sprung! Though May has been unseasonably cool and wet, both vegetables and animals made a late but promising show of fertility at our Pacific Beach Continuation High School Garden.

HYDROLOGICAL RESEARCH AT CITY FARM

Professor Bwalya Malama began working with his Cal Poly Grad students on a groundwater recharge measurement project, together with City Farm SLO tenant Corey Richmond. For explanation, click here.
