Greetings From Your President

Be careful during the holidays! There are people out there who are dreaming up ways of taking advantage of you! Some things to be aware of:

  1. Any phone call that implies a threat is a hoax. The PUD, the phone company and the IRS, for example, will never call you to demand a payment for an "overdue account". This is a common trick and if in doubt, hang up and call the company. Never give your credit card number or bank information online to anyone you don't know.
  2. Be aware of phony fundraisers. There are many disasters where funds are needed but scammers are out there hoping to trick you. There are many legitimate organizations that your donation dollars will be safe with, such as the Salvation Army.
  3. If you order something online or are expecting a package from someone, ask a neighbor to watch for it and take it in for you. Believe it or not, there are people driving around looking for packages on porches to steal.
  4. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you think you have been a victim of one of these scams.
  5. Always keep your house locked, even when you are home. A common trick for thieves is to ring a doorbell and if no one answers, they will try the door.

Sincerely,

Beverly Jagla, Unit 2 President

The 2019 Legislative Session Starts Soon!

Mary Perkins and Denise Perkins will be traveling to Olympia in January for the start of the 2019 legislative session. The Select Committee on Pension Policy met in November and passed two bill of importance to WSSRA.

  1. To start making TERS, PERS, SERS 2 the default plan for new employees who do not choose a pension plan. (Vote was 12-2)
  2. A one time 3% Plan 1 COLA passes the committee by a margin of 11-3. The 3 negative votes were from local government employer representatives.

These items now need to go through the legislative process before final approval.
