The rains came and saved the situation.

The wrinkly, drought-inflicted olives of a month ago are now shiny, plump and ready for the mill. Tanks are clean, nets are repaired, we're ready to go.

We'll be picking olives and milling Olio della Donna 2024 harvest olive oil from

16 October. Oil will be ready to ship from mid November: if all goes according to plan we'll start shipping from 10 - 15 November.

We cleared what looked like a forest to free the olive trees that had been left to fend for themselves. After a rather drastic pruning [which produced a lifetime supply of firewood] the trees are enjoying the return of air and sunlight and are bursting forth with new vegetation. Slowly but surely, with the help of that super heavy, mini hoe thing, we're removing the new shoots from the base of the trees so energy goes toward the eventual fruit-producing fronds. Next up we'll be choosing which shoots to leave to form the new branches and pruning away the others.

It will probably be a good three years before we have oil from this grove, in the meantime, whatever olives we manage to harvest will be brined for martini olives. Olives brined the traditional way in a saltwater salamoia [perfect for a dirty martini] are generally ready by the following Easter so we'll be back in touch on that front.
