Dear Members and friends of the IWA

Welcome to our July 2024 newsletter

As we start a fresh year with our new committee, we welcome you to the International Women's Association Penang!

As an organization dedicated to promoting women's interests, we invite you to join our community of like-minded individuals.

We offer various services and events throughout the year.

In this month's newsletter, you can check out our upcoming July events and read a round up of June in the IWA. You can read a brief account of the AGM on 26th June further down this newsletter.

Our members are very important to us and, as always, we want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who support the IWA.

At the IWA, we always welcome guests to join us for our events and activities. However, please note that seating may be limited and priority will be given to our members. We greatly value and appreciate the support of our members and their spouses, as they play a significant role in making the IWA possible. Therefore, it is beneficial to register early for our events, if they require registration.

Remember, spouses are entitled to member prices.

July events

Coffee morning with guest speaker

Wednesday 10th July 2024
VENUE : The IWA clubhouse
Speaker: Sally Alexander

Come and listen to Sally talk about her inspiring vision to protect vulnerable women and help them to recover.

Pembela Wanita is an NGO that was registered in October 2022. It provides a safe haven for women who are exploited, trafficked, vulnerable or in crisis, so they may feel secure during their journey of recovery. By May 2024 it had provided care for 65 people, including Malaysians, foreign spouses, refugees and migrant women and their young children.

For more details about Pembela Wanita please see the article in New Expressions – the online magazine of the IWA. You can view by clicking the link on our home page at www.iwapenang.com or the one further down this newsletter.

All are welcome at the talk – women, men, IWA members and non-members alike.

Malaysia through the lens of a matsalleh.

Belgian born Philippe Durant settled in Malaysia after an active international career in education. For the past few years he has photographed the people and landscapes of his second home. His striking and beautiful images are often of the forgotten and the everyday but somehow through his vision we are enabled to connect with them in a fresh way.

For more details about Philippe and a peek at some of his images, please see the article in New Expressions – the online magazine of the IWA. You can view by clicking the link on our home page at www.iwapenang.com or the one further down this newsletter.

Monthly Lunch Group

The lunch group normally meets on the last Wednesday of each month. There was no lunch in June as the date was reserved for the AGM.

Details of the next lunch will be advertised as soon as they're available.

Our online magazine

We have decided to publish our very own magazine and the first one is ready to read.

More than 10 years ago we regularly produced a hard copy magazine that we called EXPRESSIONS but the cost of printing became prohibitively expensive.

We are delighted to unveil NEW EXPRESSIONS - a fully digital magazine and we hope you will enjoy reading it.

NEW EXPRESSIONS will be published quarterly. To read June's edition, click the button below and you will be taken to a website called Calameo where you can view the magazine. It's best viewed on a laptop or PC with a wider screen, enabling you to view double page spreads as they were intended to be displayed. Flip the pages by clicking the arrows right or left.

June's roundup

June's activities included one of our ever-popular two day resin workshops, hosted by Sandy Reid, and of course our Annual General Meeting.

We had a fantastic turnout of 32 members and got through all the required business amid a great social vibe.

We elected a full committee and they're looking forward to taking up the reins for the coming year.

President - Esther Ng

Vice President - Linda Batten

Secretary - Lisa Williams

Assistant Secretary - Kathy Roper

Treasurer - Lee Chilman

Committee members - Frances Pinsler Wilks, Patricia Mills (who has kindly volunteered to assist Lee with Treasurer duties), Maggie Gough.

We welcome our newest members and committee office holders but are deeply grateful for the huge contribution that the outgoing committee made in what turned out to be a very challenging year.
