Recycled water regulations are designed to protect public health and the environment and since the natural water quality in Big Bear Lake, being at the top of the watershed, is already very good, the project must employ a high level of treatment to prevent degradation. Based on a modeling analysis of the Lake and numerous discussions with the Regional Board and the Division of Drinking Water, the Project Team determined that full advanced treatment would be needed. The existing BBARWA Wastewater Treatment Plant will be supplemented with a new full advanced treatment facility with a capacity of 2.2 MGD, producing approximately 2,200 AFY. Multiple treatment processes will use the best available technology to produce purified water that meets or exceeds all State and Federal water quality standards to protect public health and the environment. This includes nutrient removal, ultra filtration, reverse osmosis, and the UV advanced oxidation process.
