Not everyone uses Social Media
For our supporters who prefer not to reference Facebook, here are several updates from our page where we share articles, development application links and other local updates that we think are relevant to our beachside community.
(i) what's been happening?
Lights Out, Turtles About!
The messaging is consistent for the next few months - it’s now time to “Flip The Switch”. Turtles Dig the Dark - please help our endangered loggerhead turtles by switching off your exterior lights and drawing the blinds from 8pm each night until the end of the season in May.
SCRC recently undertook community feedback on their Site Specific Planning Scheme amendments for the 2014 Planning Scheme:
(a) this excluded the Buddina Urban Village changes, removed by the State
(b) an RTI has been lodged with the State relating to the removal of these changes
(c) submissions to Council were an opportunity for local residents to comment any the inclusions and any other matters, e.g. the removal of Buddina Urban Village changes which a majority of Councillors supported at 2 separate Council Meetings (April and June 2022). The proposed amendment for the Buddina Urban Village was to reduce the density in only the 4 corners of the residential precinct from high density to medium density and to resolve the height anomaly in the north-eastern corner.
Sunshine Coast Public Transport - the future?
TMR was seeking expressions of interest in November/December from persons located within the project area (between Maroochydore and Caloundra) to represent the community interests on the new Community Reference Group (CRG), tasked with considering options for a public transport system. We need a strong community voice at the table to ensure community views and preferences are well represented. Submissions closed on 11/12/22.
SCRC community consultation about Jessica Park proposed updates
Council provided with an opportunity to "have your say" about elements of a Council makeover for Jessica Park, perhaps with a kiosk and whether or not this parkland should be in the design spotlight? Submissions closed on 12/12/22.
Satellite tracking project
On a Thursday night in early December, an endangered loggerhead turtle nested at Buddina beach. Her special name, gifted to her, is "Bullumby" - a Kabi Kabi word meaning “beautiful one”. She has previously been recorded nesting on our dark beach during multiple seasons since she was initially tagged 13 years ago. Her story is an interesting one. She now carries a satellite tracker on her carapace.
Several nights later, a second tracker was attached to another endangered loggerhead turtle, "First Lady", after she nested on Buddina beach.
A big shoutout of appreciation to the TurtleCare team and Council’s Environment Operations team for all their hard work and long hours spent ensuring this satellite tracking project was successfully implemented.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the project and all volunteers and local residents who attended and celebrated the two special return walks by these two special loggerhead turtles to their ocean home.
Expect Council to release more information about this project in the New Year.
Let’s keep our beaches clean everyday and dark at night (lights out) so these ancient mariners return to this safe nesting habitat in the future.

(ii) some more stories of interest?
Good advice in this article from 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. We hope the new SC planning scheme considers these common sense principles:
"For example, not building on the coastal edge does not mean quarantining that land. It means allowing activities, such as recreation, that can withstand increasing coastal flooding, as well as coastal-dependent uses such as fisheries and coastal landscapes designed to absorb storm surges."

An interesting read from 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.
“Clearly, there is a vast disconnect between the coastal property market and climate change impacts such as increasingly severe storms, tidal surges, coastal erosion and flooding. There is no shortage of reports, studies and analyses confirming the climate risks we are already living with. Yet another alarming State of the Climate report was released last week.”
