If you think the answer is more likely the latter, and you want to reduce your carbon footprint then here’s a few things you can do…
1. Consolidate your devices
Buying one device can give you the same benefits as several. Treehugger.com states that your phone is more than just a mobile, it’s your: “iPod, digital camera, electronic planner, e-reader, GPS device, calculator, and so, so much more. In fact, the more uses you find for your smartphone, the more environmentally-friendly it becomes.”
2. Buy Second-hand/refurbished electronics
Even if you do choose to keep buying up-to-date tech because it’s what you’re into, you don’t always need to buy new new. Getting nearly new, refurbished devices can save you cash, and in the case of phones, SIM-only plans give you a better deal than getting a new device with a contract. By keeping virgin resources in the ground, and toxic waste out of the ground, both you and the planet are catered for.
3. Eco-friendly devices
It’s worth knowing that not all devices are created equal. Search online for companies that consider their overall impact. Fairphone is a great example as it considers the environment in the entire lifecycle of their mobile phones. Their website states: “It’s got everything you’d expect from a great phone — and so much more. It improves the conditions of the people who make it and uses materials that are better for the planet. Because how it’s made matters.”
