Welcome!

We are headed back to Bondi Beach for a celebration of Hope for the Ocean in November this year. Join us, with our new naming rights partner Volvo, from November 25th to 28th for the Festival of Ideas, Art + Music and Actions for the ocean. It is all free and with the support of Waverly Council. We have a new location in Bondi Beach Park North, adjacent to the Bondi Surf Club - you can literally wander off the beach to hear some 'Science in your Swimmers' and boogie to our bands in your boardies, see some art in your bikini, dive into an installation at Icebergs and more. Let's make it a date in the first year of the UN Ocean Decade, United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

Volvo Ocean Rescue

Volvo Australia are stamping their world leading ocean credentials right here in Australia, becoming the naming rights sponsor of the Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival where we will showcase their amazing Living Seawall  ocean restoration project.

Volvo are the world’s first car company to cease building fossil fuel combustion engines. They will join us in Bondi with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science to showcase ocean science solutions in the famous Bondi Icebergs swimming pool. It is so easy to be inspired when you meet the marine scientists saving our oceans in our very own beach backyard.

Volvo advocates design and innovation as the essence of solutions. With Volvo Car Australia supporting the Living Seawall ocean conservation project they are restoring artificial marine habitats to regenerate healthy marine ecosystems. The smart and stylish design replicates mangrove habitat and it has been enormously successful in cleaning up Sydney Harbour – home to more unique marine species than the entire Mediterranean. Come “Sea Science” for free in the pool during the festival.

Dive In Without Getting Wet

Underwater Earth (UWE), our official charity partner, will exhibit their spectacular Out of Sight, Out of Mind photography exhibition. It’s an experience not to be missed. You can all use a QR code nowadays so bring along a device to literally dive into their underwater images without getting wet. Have a look here at their latest venture and come see the exhibition at the Festival from November 25th. Try the QR code on screen with your phone camera.

Donations Open

Our supporters can now make tax-deductible donations with UWE to get behind the festival so get in touch with us if you are interested in becoming an Ocean Lover before EOFY for a deduction. A big thank you to our long term festival major donor Rob Keldoulis and Vivcourt for their support.

Litterarty Expands with Explorers

We are excited to have Australian Geographic become a partner and particularly support our school Litterarty waste-art competition with prizes of their Explorers magazines. We have expanded our competition nationally this year and have committed to bringing finalist artworks from anywhere in Australia to Bondi to exhibit at the Bondi Surf Club. We encourage kids from Kindy to Year 12 to get involved. Award-winning artists John Dahlsen and Marina Debris are among our esteemed judges. You will be amazed what our young artists have to say and share in their love of the ocean.

Meet the Scientists

Congratulations to the indomitable Dr Vanessa Pirotta whose spectacular humpback whale research hit front pages and TV in recent weeks for her work with Macquarie University’s marine predator research group. Vanessa is one of our Ocean Lovers Festival Ambassadors and will be joining us for “Science in your Swimmers” talks on our Sunshine Stage at the Festival Hub in November. There might even be some whales still cruising by Bondi to accompany her discussion. She is responsible for pioneering innovative drone technology to enable her studies of whales and dolphins. This year, this mermaid of science was named an official Superstar of STEM by Science and Technology Australia.

Fish Tank Fun

We launched our Fish Tank campaign to hook some great ideas for the ocean last year. You can see interviews online with a few fabulous eco- innovators. We would love to discover more inspiring ideas and we know there are a few young people out there with an idea to help the ocean. So, we are opening up our Fish Tank to all ages. Get in touch if you have a great idea for the ocean and want to share your inspiration.

Volunteers Are On

We didn’t even get the Festival on with COVID last year and the UN says we still promoted a bunch of their Sustainable Development Goals, (SDGs). We are proud and also grateful to the almost 100 volunteers who committed to the festival in 2020. The United Nations Association of Australia is again helping us put together a great volunteer program full of opportunities for 2021. Come join us!
