This fall, SEWA collaborated with Cigna to introduce a brand new program for women and gender non-conforming individuals, under the name Karuna Women Lead. “Karuna” is a Sanskrit word meaning an act of compassion and empathy. With this intention, four core pilot programs formed under Karuna Women Lead, including a Digital Literacy workshop culminating in certification, financial literacy workshops, behind-the-wheel driving lessons, and finally the pilot mentorship program. With a total of 10 mentors and 10 mentees, 85% are based from Minnesota, with others already participating from Wisconsin, Illinois, and New York. |
Mentees and mentors both come from a vast variety of ages and career backgrounds, such as nursing experience, finance, engineering, IT and cybersecurity, human resources, business and marketing, grassroots organizing, as well as university students. In our first cohort, there is representation from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and India, with speakers of English, Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Nepali, Telegu, Urdu, and French. We held our mentorship orientation on August 27th and officially kicked off the program on September 1st. |
On October 15th, KWL coordinated our first skills-building workshop for mentors led by MENTOR Minnesota, “Experience Informed Training.” In this training, our focus was on how to create a mentoring relationship that is healthy and centered around a trauma-sensitive lens. |
Objectives included understanding trauma in all its complexity, promoting resilience and self-care, and ultimately performing culturally responsive and developmental mentorship in all future experiences. |
We are finishing up with our first quarter, and we are set to continue mentoring and learning for the next year with many more skill-building workshops and retreats to come! |
