Covid-19 Update Sadly we are all seeing increasing numbers of symptomatic and asymptomatic cases in patients and healthcare workers. The reported new variant of the virus represents over 60% of the cases in our region, and we know that this strain spreads much more rapidly. As always, a reminder that trauma patients, particularly those that have a reduced GCS, may be infected and appropriate PPE is needed until test results are confirmed. |
The winter capacity pressures are also with us across the NHS now and we are supporting the region’s trauma patients through a new system-wide escalation policy for major trauma and a Network Status website showing the operational pressures of all our pre-hospital and hospital providers. More details are below. For staff, we know that the next few weeks would normally include time spent with loved ones and families, but this year will be very different. Thank you for your continuing care of major trauma patients. Please make sure that you stay safe, look after yourselves and your loved ones, and take some time away from work to enjoy all that Is important to you. |

Trauma East Voices We are interested in hearing about the experience of patients and their loved ones using the trauma system in the East of England. Trauma East Voices was created as a patient experience group designed to allow members to meet regularly to discuss trauma related experiences, highlight great care and suggest improvements. We were sadly forced to postpone all face-to-face engagement due to Covid-19 including this group but with hope and the vaccine now being administered we have planned the first regeneration of the group for those who were already members prior to the pandemic, with following meetings planned to open to a wider audience and new members. Further details will be distributed to members relating to the upcoming planned meeting in February 2021. Keeping our fingers crossed that we aren’t forced to postpone again. If you are interested in becoming a member for future meetings please click here to share your details with us. |

Welcome our (not so) new Network Administrator Many of you are probably familiar with Kitti as she has worked with the Network since 2017. She worked in a joint role with the Major Trauma Service, working part time for both Department. Less than a month ago we welcomed her into our team full time. Congratulations with the new position! |

Meet Kitti: My name is Kitti Czegledi. I originally moved here from Hungary, seven years ago. I always had a great interest in health care but my carrier path took another direction when I went to University. Because I still wanted to be involved in healthcare somehow, so I became a first aid trainer and supervised many students events and concerts helping the ambulance service in Hungary. Here in the UK, I was lucky enough to get a job in the NHS with the Rare Disease team, as a Clinical Data Co-ordinator. I was responsible for managing my own projects, that I thoroughly enjoyed, especially the clinical coding part. I met with great people and I learned a lots of new things and skills. I achieved to finish my first project in six months and I knew I did something amazing to help people. |
After that position I started to work as a Major Trauma Administrator, which was a joint role between the Trauma Network and the Major Trauma Service. I undertook a wide range of variety administrative work, did data entry and assisted to organise different events including trainings and conferences. A few weeks ago I joined to the EoE Trauma Network as a full time Administrator. I'm pleased that I can be part of this dynamic team and excited to continue the work, we have started already. |

Stepping into a virtual life - learning online Training and education has been severely affected by COVID-19 this year, but the positive to take from it is the development of virtual and online learning. The Trauma Network, along with colleagues from the Paediatric Critical Care and Neonatal Networks, have joined forces with Health Education East of England in order to deliver education via the Bridge and Panopto platforms. These platforms are currently available to all EoE trainee doctors, and are being used to deliver regional training, but will now also be available to nurses and AHP’s involved in trauma care. |
Content is currently being developed that will support the Trauma Team Essentials Course (TTEC), and completion of the Level 1 trauma competencies for Emergency Department nurses. Once nurses and AHP’s have completed the TTEC, they will be provided with a log in by the Network that will enable them to access the supporting materials. It is hoped that this will encourage the completion of the competencies by providing additional education to complement clinical practice. |
It is possible to upload recorded live teaching sessions, and to convert PowerPoint presentations, so if you are delivering a teaching session on anything trauma related, please consider whether it would benefit a wider audience through being available on Bridge or Panopto. I would be particularly interested in sessions relating to ward nursing care and rehabilitation topics in order to build content that will support the ward based trauma competencies. |

Upcoming new escalation document Following recent changes in retiring the ‘Divert Policy’ document from use within the network we are to introduce a new escalation document which will align the network activity with the nationally recognised OPEL scoring system. The document has been circulated to key trauma leads across the network with comments incorporated into the current draft. The document is in its final stages of regional sign off and when compete the final version will be shared across the network. |
The Trauma OPEL score from within the document will be utilised to support the new changes in the Network Status website – Should you need support with the Trauma OPEL scores prior to regional sign off please email the team at trauma.east@nhs.net |
