Advent: Waiting, Anticipating, Hoping and Joy

A few days ago, I was asked to share an Advent presentation that I had prepared many years ago for a 7th grade CCD class.  After emailing it I was sitting down to write this message and I thought how meaningful Advent is to us this year.  This time of waiting, anticipating, and hoping.  This past Sunday was Gaudete Sunday.  It celebrates the joy that we anticipate in the birth of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ at Christmas. In this year of pandemic, we have been waiting, anticipating and hoping for life to get back to normal, but there has been joy in it also.

Advent is a time of preparation and anticipation.  The word advent means “prepare”.  We mark the weeks of Advent by lighting the candles of the Advent wreath and we anticipate the joy of Christmas.  The purple candles for the waiting, anticipating, and hoping and the pink candle for joy.  This year more than ever, we are “waiting, anticipating and hoping”.  With the vaccination beginning to be distributed we see a light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe our time of "confinement" is coming to an end soon.  We look with hope to the time when we will be able to gather together with friends and family without risk of the virus.

But with the challenges have come blessings. We have all become adept at Zoom meetings.  This past year we only met in person four times, January, February, June and October. I have missed seeing everyone, but with foresight and planning we were able to hold the fundraiser as a virtual event and raised enough money to fund our scholarships again.  We have an informative and insightful virtual meeting on social justice this summer and Advent started with our first virtual spiritual event on the Women of Advent.  Though it has been anything but normal we have endured this year and found the blessings that God has bestowed on us in our confinement.  We look forward to the time when we can be together again, back to Mass in person, the business expo, the annual fundraiser and our anniversary celebration.

Just as in the Magnificat Mary finds joy in her confinement, so there have been blessings in our confinement (lockdown).  Let us take time this Advent to be thankful and proclaim our blessings, just as Blessed Mary did over 2000 years ago.  This year, we are all waiting, anticipating, and hoping that with the joy of Christ's birth we will be renewed.  May Christmas bring you hope, peace, and most of all, joy.

Christmas Blessings,

Teri Gordon

As my Christmas Gift, I leave you with this quote:

“This is my wish for you:

Comfort on difficult days, smiles when sadness intrudes, rainbows to follow the clouds, laughter to kiss your lips, sunsets to warm your heart, hugs when spirits sag, beauty for your eyes to see, friendships to brighten your being, faith so that you can believe, confidence for when you doubt, courage to know yourself, patience to accept the truth,

Love to complete your life.”

Continuing A Christmas Tradition for the Sisters

It’s not too late to contribute to gifts for the retired sisters in Nashville! This is an annual tradition for the League that ties in with our mission to support education, as many of the sisters are former teachers.

We are collecting stamps for the Sisters at the Mercy Convent. To donate, mail your stamps to Lynne Warne and she will drop them off before Christmas. Her mailing address is 713 Westview Avenue, Nashville TN 37205.

This year, the sisters at the Dominican Motherhouse requested a special chair to use in the shower. Checks are being accepted to support this request and should be mailed to the official NCBWL address at:

PO Box 50994 Nashville, TN 37205.

December Spiritual Enrichment: The Women of Advent

ZOOM MEETING

Members took to Zoom to participate in the Spiritual Enrichment on December 2nd.

Margaret McPherson, Lead Adult Bible Study teacher at Holy Family Catholic Church, led the discussion "Women of Advent" in the virtual meeting.

She highlighted the women of the Bible, St. Ann, Hannah, Elizabeth, and the Virgin Mary as examples to guide our Advent thoughts and activities this year.

A Word From Teri Gordon

My sincere hope for the New Year is that we will be able to resume monthly dinner meetings. At this point we will just need to determine if it is safe to gather on a month-to-month basis. Look for updates in your email.

Merry Christmas to all! And may we meet again in the New Year.
