Fountain of Youth...For Reals!

The brilliant Joseph Pilates believed the spine was the key to physical and emotional well-being. He was quoted as saying, "If your spine is stiff at 30 you are old. If it is flexible at 60, you are young."

This coming week...wheel pose. And while we will certainly be getting our spine moving, we will also look at how the power and support from the arms and legs inform the movement of the spine.

This is especially true when we are moving into a more comfortable arch-like C-curve instead of a crunchy V-shape that tends to use the lower back as a hinge.

Comfort is our guide when finding what version of wheel is ideal for you - an evenly distributed backbend with the limbs participating should feel easeful.

As you know, my teaching style isn't one-size-fits-all. Check out this pic for just a few options we have at our disposal.

For tight shoulders, blocks under the hands is helpful, for tighter hips blocks work well under the feet.

For others, the yoga chair is a perfect prop or perhaps find the strength in the shoulders by exploring the initial lifting sensation is best.

Our small class size makes it possible for us to work together to discover these details and explore movement in comfortable yet strong ways.

Come play in wheel with me this week and remember, working on your spinal mobility is your true fountain of youth!

Much love,

Jen
