Hello, Autumn

Hello, friends! I hope this finds you well and savoring the colorful change of seasons. Here in North Carolina we're having a gorgeous fall and the weather has been mostly warm and sunny. This week has brought in a chill, so I'm looking forward to some cozy evenings by the fire.

A Year in this House- almost a wrap

The column that I've been illustrating for Our State magazine this year, entitled A Year in This House, will be coming to an end soon. It has been such a privilege and a joy to work on this project. Many of you who are subscribers to Our State have reached out to tell me how much you've been enjoying seeing my work in the

magazine every month. I really appreciate those calls and messages, which are so encouraging. Knowing that there are folks who look forward to seeing what I'm working on is an extra motivation to do my very best work. ♥

Very seasonably appropriate, especially this chilly week, is the illustration I did for the October issue. The column's author, Drew Perry, wrote about how his family got rid of their old gas logs in favor of a wood-burning fireplace. As it happens, we did the same thing with our fireplace the winter before last. And a perfect decision, it was.

What the Hearth Wants- on page 38 of the Oct 2023 issue and you can find all of the columns that have been published so far here.

Please remember me as you start thinking about holiday shopping! Art is a gift that is always appreciated and it lasts much longer than most gifts.

A moment of appreciation for a departed friend, mentor, and very special human.

As many of you have already heard, Joe Miller, most commonly known as "Cheap Joe" passed away on September 6th. Joe was my first mentor and the first artist who helped me believe I had the potential to become a successful artist because he believed in me. He was a force in the watercolor world, supporting artists of all levels and making friends everywhere he went. Read a little about Joe's fascinating life in his obituary. Or for a great read, I highly recommend Joe's biography written by his own mentor, Noyes Capehart, entitled Cheap Joe, or any of Joe's own books. He will be missed for a very long time.

Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be planning my schedule for the next round of watercolor classes, which will begin in early 2024. Look for an email from me by early December with registration information.

Thanks so much for following along! If you're in the area, don't forget about the WSNC exhibition Nov. 5 to Jan. 5, with a reception this Sunday, 2 to 4 pm, at the Durham Arts Council.

All the best,

Laura
